Sigh…that’s all that Sox fans can really say about JBJ.  He just hasn’t ever really produced at the level in which everyone would hope.  Yes he is dynamite in the field and, yes, he gets hot for a month, but Bradley Jr. has routinely left Red Sox Nation wanting more.

2019 Season:  Once again Jackie Bradley Jr. did not live up to expectations at the plate.  The supposed “new” swing had fans (me included) buying in that 2019 was the season Bradley would take the next step offensively.  That wasn’t the case, because once again he floated just above the Mendoza line.  JBJ did hit 21 home runs, which is the 2nd highest total of his career.  But in today’s baseball climate 20 home run hitters are a dime a dozen.  However, his glove didn’t slip a bit as he played a fantastic center field for the Sox.  As long as he can maintain that defensive dominance he will have a starting role for a Major League ball club.

2019 Key Stat:  .225 Batting average.  This is the key stat because it just highlights Bradley’s lack of contact.  The contact he displayed way back when, when he was at the University of South Carolina.  It is even more perplexing when you remember he always gets hot for a month of the season.  Last June, JBJ batted .315 and got on base around 40% of the time.  He followed up his hot June with a freezing cold July and August where he batted .198 and .194.  Bradley could be such a good player if he was just able to find a way to be consistent at the plate.

BSS Red Sox Podcast TBNL 2020 OUTLOOK

Expect the same JBJ in 2020 as you have seen throughout his career, stellar defensive play in the outfield but to sputter at the plate.  It’s a bummer really; Jackie can make such incredible plays in the outfield but gets tuned out because of his inability to produce at the plate.  Given his pretty large annual salary ($11M) you can see a scenario where the Sox look to unload the outfielder.  And with the arrival of Alex Verdugo it seems reasonable for Boston to look to trade Bradley.  I don’t expect JBJ finishes the year with the Red Sox whether they contend or not.  But hey, if he doesn’t get moved, you can always look forward to the hot month stretch at some point this summer.
