Bogaerts signed a major contract extension at the beginning of 2019 and followed it up with a monster season both on and off the field.  Bogaerts was named to his second All-Star Game in 2019, and finished fifth in the American League Most Valuable Player vote.

2019 Season:  Bogaerts inked a six-year $120 M contract extension at the beginning of the 2019 season which looked like a good deal at the time.  As the season progressed, it began to look like an absolute steal.  Bogaerts was the team’s most consistent offensive weapon, leading the team in RBI and OPS, and coming in second in home runs and doubles.  He has also continued to grow defensively, and while he doesn’t possess either an above average arm or range, he emulates his boyhood idol Derek Jeter in making all the routine plays.  Bogaerts also became a leader off the field, and was credited in part with the blossoming of Rafael Devers as a major league player.

2019 Key Stat:  114 RBI recorded while playing shortstop, tops in major league baseball and far ahead of second place Marcus Semien (92).

BSS Red Sox Podcast TBNL 2020 OUTLOOK

Bogaerts will be hard pressed to match his offensive output of 2019, especially as a run producer.  With Mookie Betts gone, Bogaerts will simply have less opportunities to drive in runs.  He could also be a potential candidate to succeed Betts in the lead-off spot, which isn’t far-fetched given his .384 OBP in 2019, second on the team to Betts’ .391.  But even with reduced production Bogaerts should still be a force in the heart of the Red Sox lineup for 2020 and for many years to come.
