Red Sox Sign OF Kevin Pillar

It’s been an active start of the week for Chaim Bloom and the Red Sox. The club has agreed to sign free agent outfielder Kevin Pillar.

Pillar, 31, batted .259 with 21 home runs and 87 RBI last season. The 21 home runs were a career high for the veteran right-handed hitter. After spending last season with the Giants, Pillar was non-tendered earlier in the winter.

Boston is expected to feature an outfield that’ll consist of Andrew Benintendi, Jackie Bradley Jr. and newly acquired Alex Verdugo. Pillar will provide depth at an area of need following the Mookie Betts trade. He will also provide insurance as a fourth outfielder or if the Red Sox make another trade.

The Red Sox outfield became left handed heavy as well following the acquisition of Verdugo.

Pillar is better known for his defense and Red Sox fans will definitely appreciate the leather he will flash in the outfield.  Red Sox fans saw Pillar on a regular basis during the six years he spent with the Blue Jays.

Pillar was projected to earn over $10 million in arbitration had he stayed with the Giants, will come to Boston on a one year deal according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Terms of the contract have not yet been released.

While his bat isn’t going to replace Betts, it’s not meant to. Pillar is a good fourth outfielder for the Red Sox. He will spell JBJ in center and serve as insurance for Verdugo, who had some back issues last season.

This move is a solid pick up for Bloom who just needs to be allowed to do his job. Now it’s time to sign some starting pitching and add depth to the rotation.
