DEFCON 3: Chris Sale Undergos MRI, Dr. Andrews To Review Results

The news coming out of Spring Training today is that Red Sox ace Chris Sale experienced left elbow soreness and had an MRI.  The results of the MRI are being sent to Dr. James Andrews to get the full scope of what is going on inside Sale’s elbow.

This news is coming off batting practice on Monday after only throwing 15 pitches.

Red Sox interim manager Ron Roenicke has expressed concern over Sale’s elbow as the team awaits for the prognosis back from Andrews.

Sale last faced hitters last August, giving up five runs with 12 strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings in a win at Cleveland.  The club shut down Sale after that start due to elbow inflammation which ended Sale’s season.  He finished last season 6-11 with a 4.40 ERA in 25 starts.  His 4.40 ERA was the worst of his big league career.

I have to admit, this offseason and now spring just sucks.  The Red Sox can’t get out of their own way, it just feels like any and all news coming out from the organization is negative.  While the outlook on Sale is completely unknown, it just feels like Tommy John is looming around the corner.

This is not going to be the first time that Sale and Dr. Andrews would be linked together.  Last season, Sale saw Dr. Andrews and was given a PRP shot which allowed him to avoid surgery.  When any player is linked to see Dr. Andrews the feeling is always uneasy because typical the end result is surgery.  The Red Sox are doing their due diligence due to the familiarity he has with Sale.

Sale is currently on the IL and will miss the beginning of the start of the season due to coming to Spring Training coming off having pneumonia.  The club wanted to give Sale extra time to get healthy and ready for the start of the season.

Prior to the Red Sox acquiring Sale from the White Sox the fear that Sale’s arm could eventually explode has been a concern.  His mechanics have made Sale into a star and the ace that he has become in Chicago and Boston.

Shop for Boston Red Sox fan gear from Nike, Majestic and New Era at Shop.MLB.comPeople in baseball have said that Sale’s quick delivery has put a lot of stress on his elbow.  Sale’s elbow has always been a ticking time bomb and now we are hoping and praying he isn’t about to spend 2020 and beyond on the shelf due to elbow surgery.

The whole Sale situation has been a complete mess since the club extended him last March to a five-year, $145 million dollar contract.  The new deal starts this season and runs through the 2024 season. Sale will earn $30 million per year from 2020-22, and $27.5 million in '23 and '24.

As a Red Sox fan, I find this completely negligent on the behalf of ownership.  Red Sox principle owner John Henry signed off on this extension for Sale when Dombrowski signed Sale.  How does an owner not due his due diligence on Sale prior to allowing the club to agree to this extension?  The Red Sox now have significant money tied into Sale for the next five years that could have gone in the direction of Mookie Betts.

I want to be clear, I am not mad that Sale is hurt.  I am pissed that the Red Sox have been completely negligent the last few seasons in their attempts to build a roster.  While the Red Sox did win a World Series back in 2018, I think it’s safe to say, at what cost?

Dombrowski fell in love with his players versus thinking objectively and spent his team's payroll on the wrong players.  Then ownership allowed Dombrowski to sign these players on top of the fact that Dombrowski was a lame duck general manager heading into 2019.

We sold our souls for that World Series championship.  I just never thought immediately following that championship the team would recklessly spend on Sale.  The Red Sox were the best team in baseball in 2018 and deserved to win the World Series.  But is it too much to ask to finally see this organization put together a program where they can be competitive year in and year out?  You can’t always throw money at the problems, and Sale is now a problem.

If Sale is indeed going to head for surgery, Eduardo Rodriguez, Nathan Eovaldi and Martin Perez will have to anchor the rotation.  The team has already announced they were going with an opener approach for the other starts this season.

If the Red Sox lose Sale for any stretch of the season, or even the whole season, it significantly impacts this team's playoff chances in 2020.

The offseason was one to forget; the spring hasn’t been much better now with the Sale news.  Red Sox Nation, don’t forget Major League Baseball hasn’t even announced the findings from the 2018 cheating scandal either.  This season was lost way before it began.
