Patriots Mock Draft Pick: MTSU LB Tyshun Render

The enigma of Bill Belichick has resulted in 20 plus years of dominance in New England.  After six Super Bowl championships the team could be changing its course some and begin building the next wave of great Patriots teams.

While the speculation ran rampant over the last few weeks on where future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady will play his final seasons, Belichick is just staying the course and focused on building his team for next season and beyond.

This past week, while the football world was in Indianapolis for the NFL Combine, the best head coach in the game of football was working out a lesser known player.

While the league was in Indianapolis, Belichick went to Middle Tennessee State University to work out linebacker/defensive end Tyshun Render.

The one thing Belichick values in a player is maximizing overall versatility of a player.  Render is just that, the projected late round draft pick spent three hours with the Patriots head coach.

While the league was in Indy, Belichick was outside in the pouring rain working out the 6-foot-4, 256-pound Render.

MTSU coach Rick Stockstill was excited to see his player get an opportunity with Belichick.  “He was very gracious, talking to us, and with how he treated Tyshun, how he asked him questions, how he communicated with him.

“When you think about it, here’s arguably the best football coach ever in the NFL, and he’s on our campus, working out one of our players in the cold, pouring-down rain” said the coach to ESPN.

In his four years at MTSU, Render has 119 total tackles, 19.5 tackles for a loss and 6.5 sacks.  His size and versatility on defense makes him a prototypical Patriots potential draftee.

While this type of news at times probably could make Patriots fans scratch their collective heads, thinking why would Belichick not be at the combine but instead with a late round pick in the rain?

That’s just the genius of the Patriots head coach.  I’m sure that every team does this type of thing every year.  They go to a college campus and privately work out a player.  But when Belichick does it, especially on the first day of the NFL Combine, it creates a buzz as to what could the other teams be missing in this player?

Belichick has always been a stickler for details.  The Patriots got a first hand look on Render who could be a future Draft selection for the Patriots.

Fans and media can debate the 20 or more drafts Belichick has completed during his tenure in New England.  The one thing he does very well, he finds value and versatility in the later rounds.  Those players end up being the backbone to the machine in New England.  While everything runs through Brady and the offense, it’s players like Render that give the Patriots the edge each year.

Belichick going to Tennessee is further proof that while the league is playing checkers, Belichick continues to play chess.  Your move NFL.
