Patriots Mock Draft Pick: Norte Dame TE Cole Kmet

At this years NFL Combine in Indianapolis, Notre Dame TE Cole Kmet looked good.  In fact, he could be the first tight end taken in the draft.

The New England Patriots are retooling the roster and need significant depth at tight end.  Since the retirement of All-Pro Rob Gronkowski, the Patriots haven’t adequately replaced him.  Last season, Matt LaCosse, Benjamin Watson and Ryan Izzo were Tom Brady’s options at tight end, and they were lackluster to say the least.

Kmet could fit the Patriots system quite nicely and give Brady or whoever is the quarterback a big body option.  Kmet, who is 6-foot-5 and 262 pounds, would bring size and the ability to catch the football to a team that lacked a pass catching tight end threat last season.

Shop NFL Sideline Gear at Fanatics.comAt Notre Dame last season, Kmet has 43 receptions for 515 yards and six touchdowns.  Kmet is a big physical tight end who has drawn comparisons to Gronkowski at the Combine.

“He’s the one that, if you’re saying, ‘OK, who looks like Gronk and who kind of has that physicality?’ — it would be Kmet.  Now, I’m not saying he’s as athletic as Gronk, but he’s somebody with that big catch radius.  He’s tough to tackle.  He’s big and physical and strong, and he’s good in the run game.  He can create some movement there and help you.  He’s a nice two-way tight end,” said NFL Network’s lead draft analysis Daniel Jeremiah.

At the Combine, Kmet ran an official 4.70 in the 40-yard dash.  Considering he is 262 pounds, that’s an outstanding number for the Notre Dame product.

Gronkowski ran a 4.68, had a 33.5" vertical jump, a 119" broad jump and had a 4.47 in the pro shuttle.
Kmet has a combination of size and athleticism that Patriots head coach Bill Belichick would love on his offense.  The question will be is whether Kmet will be available when the Patriots pick in the later rounds.  Odds are no, due to the fact the Patriots do not own a second round pick due to the Mohamed Sanu trade last season.
I like the tools that Kmet brings especially if he comes to New England.  Being able to throw over the middle and having a big bodied tight end will help open up the offense better than what Brady had last season.

Kmet considers himself the number one tight end draft target.  He certainly doesn’t lack confidence but there may not be an overall consensus that he is the top tight end on the board.

Kmet was able to show his speed and explosiveness at the Combine which shot him up the draft board for a lot of teams.  The Patriots will see some competition for Kmet.

I’d like to see the Patriots draft Kmet and insert him in this offense.  Questions will continue to surround as to who will be the Patriots quarterback, but that shouldn’t stop Belichick from drafting Kmet.  His ceiling is high and he is still developing into a talent.

Let’s hope we can see Kmet creating mismatches very similar to Gronkowski in 2020.  The Patriots have so many options this year to draft, it’ll be interesting in what direction Belichick will go.  He needs to draft Kmet.
