Alex Verdugo

Newbie Alex Verdugo will have some additional pressure in 2020.  Being the main trade piece in the return for Mookie Betts, fans will have a close eye on him.  He has solid bat and is a slick outfielder so only time will tell.

·         Position(s): Outfield
·         2020 opening day age: 23
·         Bats / Throws: Left / Left
·         Height / weight: 6'-0'' / 212 pounds
·         Nickname: Dugie
·         How acquired: Acquired in the Mookie Betts trade this past offseason
·         Contract status: Pre-Arbitration Eligible (free agent in 2025)
·         2019 Stats: .294 BA, 12 HR, 44 RBI, 101 hits, 4 SB, 43 runs, .342| .475 | .817. WAR 3.1 (All with the Los Angeles Dodgers) The Official Online Shop of Major League Baseball
2019 Season:  Alex Verdugo has seen time in the majors each of the last 3 seasons.  In 2017 he played only 15 games, in 2018 he played in more games but still only 37.  Last year Verdugo played in 106 games with LA, and I think he proved that he can be a solid big leaguer.  The former top prospect did not disappoint once he got the official call up.  His bat looks good enough to perform at the highest level and his fielding skills can be elite.  Verdugo will NOT replace Mookie Betts, but I think fans will be surprised on how talented a player Dugie is.

2019 Key Stat:  3.1 WAR – Between his bat and his fielding, Verdugo was a 3 win above replacement player for the Dodgers.  If he performs along the same lines for a full season you could see his WAR increase over 4.  For some context that compare him to the likes of Bryce Harper, Whit Merrifield and Corey Seager and ahead of familiar names like Gleyber Torres, Anthony Rizzo and Tommy Pham.

BSS Red Sox Podcast TBNL 2020 OUTLOOK

Alex Verdugo has a smooth left-handed swing that screams Fenway Park.  I know, I know, you have heard that plenty of times before, but if you watch any of Dugie’s 2019 highlights it won’t take long until you realize it is true.  It is not hard to picture a .300 average with close to 20 homers from the new Sox outfielder.  He will also be able to help in the outfield right away.  Well, not right away, because he does have to recover from his back ailment.  Verdugo has the range to play center field in Fenway and has the arm to hold down right field.  And let’s face it anyone, including myself, can play a descent left field in the friendly confines of Fenway.  I hope Red Sox Nation doesn’t just compare Verdugo to Betts because that is a tad unfair.  Betts is an established elite player and Verdugo still hasn’t played a complete season.  I like his skill set and he has the talent to contribute in this Red Sox lineup.  It may sound like I am pretty high on Verdugo, and maybe that’s true but what can I say I like the player.
