Colten Brewer

The Red Sox bullpen was overworked last season due to the starting rotation being unable to go deep into games.  Brewer was featured in 58 games for the Red Sox last season.  Will Brewer crack the 26-man roster and leave Fort Myers with the Red Sox?

2019 Season:  Brewer spent the majority of the season with the Red Sox appearing in 58 games. When Dave Dombrowski acquired Brewer from the Padres, he came to the club as a potential sleeper for the bullpen.  But unfortunately he failed to show consistency throughout the course of the year.

Brewer showed that he was a good ground ball pitcher for the Red Sox.  In fact, he got 53 batters to ground out last season.  Despite that, Brewer would allow a home run every nine innings of work.  So while he was able to get the ball on the ground, he also offered up his fair share in the air as well.

2019 Key Stat:  Brewer was tougher against lefties last season.  They hit .244 against the Red Sox reliever.  The righty relied too heavily on his cutter last season versus his fastball.  That did not yield promising results, seeing as his opponents realized he wasn’t throwing the heater and relied on his other pitches in his arsenal.

BSS Red Sox Podcast TBNL 2020 OUTLOOK

I am not going into 2020 with high expectations for Brewer.  He has value because he has player options left and the team has him under their control through 2025.  If Brewer can get batters to hit the ball on the ground similar to last year, that will allow the right hander to be successful out of the pen in 2020.  The concern will be his fly ball rate and walk rate.  Brewer needs to throw his fastball this season and mix in his other pitches.

I like Brewer and think that if he can get back to form he can be a positive in the Red Sox bullpen this season.  He has a good arm, a plus-fastball and a plus-breaking ball.  He has shown that he can pitch well at the minor league level, which the Red Sox will hope can translate to the Majors this season.

If Brewer doesn’t make the team out of the spring, he can provide depth in Pawtucket until he gets the call-up.  The Red Sox plan to use the opener approach this season due to their lack of starting pitching depth.  Brewer should see time quite often for the Red Sox based off how the team will use the opener and try to keep fresh arms in Boston all season long.
