In just the second year of his career, Hernandez could be relied upon fairly heavily to produce for the Boston Red Sox bullpen.  Truthfully, he is a complete unknown with upside.  If the former top prospect can get high leverage outs late in ball games, he could become one of the most important players on the roster very quickly.

Shop for officially licensed MLB Caps from New Era at Shop.MLB.com2019 Season:  There isn’t much tape on Hernandez from last season.  He only tossed 30 innings but he did flash in his brief cup of coffee.  Between August and September, Hernandez had a seven game stretch where he did not give up a run.  That stretch brought down his ERA to 2.83 and the same run included a two inning - five strikeout performance against the Angels.  Even though he didn’t pitch enough with the big league club in 2019, he showed enough to start the year as a Red Sox reliever.

2019 Key Stat:  16.9 strikeouts per nine innings pitched.  If Hernandez pitched the entire season with the same effectiveness, then his K/9 would rival some of the best relievers in the Bigs.  I know that is a big question mark, but I think it displays Hernandez’s potential.  The Venezuelan lefty has a major league quality repertoire that gets outs.

BSS Red Sox Podcast TBNL 2020 OUTLOOK

The former top pitching prospect has the potential to be the most electric arm in the Sox bullpen.  And I do expect him to be a reliever all year.  Reports surfaced that he could be stretched out, but I think his skills are best suited out of the pen.  With Brandon Workman already named the initial closer for the season, Darwinzon could be used in high leverage situations earlier in the game.  The lefty needs to sharpen his control with his pitches.  If he manages to improve his control, then I think you could see great results.  His fastball has life, and when he’s at his best the ol number one has tremendous movement.  It is a perfect pitch to pair with his devastating curveball.  I do not think that Hernandez will get many saves for Boston, but I do think that he will be a very important member of this bullpen.  This season, 2020, could be the most crucial year in Darwinzon Hernandez’s development.
