Red Sox Roster Preview

The Syndicate's Red Sox Writers and Red Sox Podcast to be Named Later Hosts will be profiling a different Sox player each day to get you ready for the 2020 season.  Today's featured player:

Arauz (pronounced a-ROWS) was acquired by the Red Sox via the 2019 Rule 5 Draft out of the Houston Astros minor league.  As a Rule 5 player, Arauz cannot be optioned to the minor leagues and must remain on the Red Sox major league roster for the entire season.  Should he not make the 26-man roster, the Red Sox will either have to return him to the Astros, or work out a trade to allow him to remain with the Sox organization and be sent to the minor leagues.

2019 Key Stat:  0, as in the number of games played above the AA level.

BSS Red Sox Podcast TBNL 2020 OUTLOOK

Arauz’s glove is considered to be major league ready, but his bat certainly is not.  In past seasons it would have been a long shot for a player with Arauz’s credentials to win a spot on the major league roster.  But the addition of a 26th roster spot this season gives the Red Sox a little more flexibility to use that extra spot for infield defense late in games.  Arauz will be competing against Tzu-Wei Lin and Marco Hernandez for the utility infielder spot, two players with MLB experience, and in Lin’s case, out of minor league options.  If Arauz does make the team, it could be an indication that the Red Sox don’t consider themselves to be contenders in 2020 and are building for the future.
