The Red Sox signed utility player Jose Peraza to a one-year deal this offseason.  Peraza will get an opportunity to be the starting second baseman for the Red Sox this season.  The former top prospect brings position flexibility that former Red Sox utility player Brock Holt brought to the roster.

With the Reds last season, Peraza started 50 games at second, 22 at shortstop and one at third base.

Peraza got an opportunity to play last season after second baseman Scooter Gennett injured his groin.  Peraza struggled at the plate all season, resulting in the Reds optioning him to Triple-A Louisville in August last season.

It’s a little surprising the Reds would have non-tendered Peraza this offseason.  He has value and could have potentially been a trade candidate for the Reds.

2019 Key Stat:  Peraza struggled offensively last season for the Reds.  The Red Sox will be looking to see if Peraza can tap into his 2018 season that saw him hit .288 with 14 homers and 58 RBIs in 157 games.  If Peraza brings that type of production to this new Red Sox lineup, that would be a big win for a team that has been criticized all offseason for the player moves and public relations nightmares that have followed the team.

BSS Red Sox Podcast TBNL 2020 OUTLOOK

Peraza was the first significant move made by the Red Sox in the offseason, when they agreed to terms on a one-year $3 million dollar deal.  Peraza provides some depth and versatility to the Red Sox roster similar to the hole left by Brock Holt, who is now with the Brewers.  Once he was signed, it essentially signaled the end for Holt, who was an extremely big fan favorite in Beantown.

Peraza comes to Boston eligible for with the Red Sox for the next two seasons after this year, so he provides potential value and control for Chaim Bloom and his front office.  The benefit that he is young and cheap shouldn’t be overlooked by Red Sox fans.

The former top prospect will have an opportunity to play every day with the Red Sox, but he will have the fan base pressure of having to compare to Holt.  With this addition, players like Tzu-Wei Lin and Marco Hernandez could be on the bubble considering both players are now out of options for the Red Sox.

If Peraza can get back to the player he was offensively a few seasons ago, the Red Sox have gotten a really good player and cheap.  While he is not being handed the everyday role at second base, he will have to compete with Michael Chavis in camp.  Peraza adds an additional layer of depth for manager Ron Roenicke to fill his lineup card out over the course of the 162 game season.
