Kevin Plawecki signed with the Red Sox after he was non-tendered by the Indians this offseason.  He became expendable when the Indians acquired catcher Sandy Leon from the Red Sox.

  • 2020 opening day age: 30
  • Bats / Throws: Right / Right
  • Height / weight: 6'-2" / 220 pounds
  • Nickname: Plaw Dawg
  • How acquired: Free Agent signing 2020
  • Contract status: Signed thru 2020, 1 yr/$900k, Arbitration Eligible: 2021, Free Agent: 2023
  • 2019 Stats: .222 BA, 3 HR, 17 RBI, 35 hits, 0 SB, 13 runs, .287 | .342 | .629 | WAR -0.1
Gear up for the 2020 MLB Season with new gear from Nike2019 Season: Plawecki played last season in Cleveland, where he batted .222 with three home runs and 17 RBI in 59 games for the Tribe.  He became expendable after the Indians acquired Leon from the Red Sox.  He is expected to be the backup for starting catcher Christian Vazquez, who had a breakout year.  Plawecki is not known for his bat, but the Red Sox are hoping for the stats he put up with the Mets two years ago and not the stat line with Cleveland.

2019 Key Stat: He's a backup catcher that was cut from the Indians.  An interesting tidbit about Plawecki is he pitched last season for the Indians.  The Indians were playing the Braves at Progressive Field and were trailing by eight runs.  Manager Terry Francona told Plawecki to get loose because he didn’t want to over-extend the bullpen.  Plawecki grabbed Mike Clevinger’s glove and headed to the bump.  He threw 13 pitches, nine for strikes, and he went on to retire Ozzie Albies, Charlie Culberson and Johan Camargo.  This was not the first time he was on the mound.  He pitched for the Mets in 2017 and allowed three home runs.

BSS Red Sox Podcast TBNL 2020 OUTLOOK
Plawecki is a good back-up defensive catcher that will help fill the void left by Sandy Leon, who was traded to the Indians at the beginning of the offseason. Plawecki has said, “I like to say calling a game is a strong point,” Plawecki said. “My receiving’s strong. Other than that, I try and just be the all-around best player I can be.”
With the addition of veteran Jonathan Lucroy on a minor league deal, he is expected to compete with Plawecki for the backup job behind Vazquez. Plawecki is a low cost option versus Leon, who was expected to earn around $3 million in Boston this year. Plawecki who is a high energy player, and will be a nice addition to a clubhouse that has seen turnover on the roster and on the coaching staff.
I would expect Plawecki, if he makes the club, to play in 40-50 games.
