Nathan Eovaldi

Eovaldi was the fan-favorite of the 2018 World Series after his heroic efforts in relief in the epic 18 inning Game 3.  Eovaldi went to free agency after the Series and was re-signed to a lucrative four-year, $68 M deal based more on sentimentality than on-field accomplishments or potential.

2019 Season:  Like most of the Red Sox pitchers who shouldered a heavy workload in the 2018 postseason, appearing in relief in addition to starting games, Eovaldi was brought along slowly in Spring Training.  And like Chris Sale, David Price and Rick Porcello, Eovaldi was not quite ready for the opening bell and was cuffed around in his few starts of the season, allowing 14 earned runs and six homers in his first three starts of the season.

Gear up for the 2020 MLB Season with new gear from NikeIt appeared Eovaldi turned his season around in his fourth start of the season against the Yankees when he allowed only one unearned run in six innings.  But that was the last start Eovaldi would make until August 18 as he went on the disabled list with a recurrence of “loose bodies” in his surgically repaired right elbow.  Eovaldi returned to the team in a relief role on July 22 in a desperate move to shore up a struggling bullpen in need of a closer, but that experiment failed as well.  Eovaldi went 1-0 as a reliever with a 5.20 ERA, zero saves and one blown save.  Upon returning to the starting rotation, Eovaldi went 1-1 with a 6.21 ERA in eight starts, allowing 23 earned runs in 33.1 innings pitched.

2019 Key Stat:  12 – The number of games started by Eovaldi in 2019.  That isn’t good enough for a player making $17 M per year.

BSS Red Sox Podcast TBNL 2020 OUTLOOK

Eovaldi is now the Number 3 starter behind Sale and Eduardo Rodriguez after the trade of David Price to the Dodgers and the loss of Rick Porcello to free agency.  Eovaldi has a career record of 46-54 with a 4.30 ERA, and despite a fastball that can hit 102 MPH, he has a surprising low 7.0 career strikeout per nine inning ratio.  With a lack of starting pitching depth on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox need Eovaldi to pitch more to his potential and at least become a reliable Major League starter.  That’s a big gamble to take on a guy that has not thrown more than 150 innings since 2015 when he pitched for the Yankees.
