Since joining the Red Sox, Ryan Brasier has been the embodiment of "a tale of two seasons".  He came over from playing in Japan and achieved a 1.60 ERA and a 0.77 WHIP in 33.2 innings in 2018.  After this elite season, Brasier was hit very hard in 2019 and is no longer guaranteed an important role in 2020.

2019 Season

Gear up for the 2020 MLB Season with new gear from Nike
2019 was not kind to Ryan Brasier, as he pitched to a 4.85 ERA backed up by a 4.42 FIP.  The big differences between his '18 and '19 campaigns were increases in walks (3% increase), home runs (.93 per inning increase), and barrel % (6.2% increase).  The slider was Brasier's only pitch that performed well, with opponents posting a .133 batting average against it.  The fastball (.269 AVG), changeup (.316), and sinker (.500) were a different story.  Overall, it was not a very good season at all for the Texas native.

2019 Key Stat

Brasier's HR/FB (home runs per fly ball) rose from 5.7 to 12.5%, causing his HR/9 innings to rise 0.53 to 1.46.  The home run problem seems to be a result of hitters figuring him out in his second season back and barreling his pitches much more often.  Home runs are obviously a real killer for bullpen pitchers, so it is imperative that Brasier fixes this issue if he is to be part of the bullpen picture going forward.

BSS Red Sox Podcast TBNL 2020 Outlook

Fans should not expect anything close to Brasier's 2018 as he seems to have come down to earth.  Most projections have him marked for an ERA in the low 4's, which is certainly attainable if the walks and home runs come down some.  It would be key if Brasier could improve his K/9 again (2.11 increase from 2018 to 2019), but I see it settling between those two seasons.  He will look to get back to relevance in the Sox bullpen this season, and should be expected to have a fine but uninspiring season as a middle reliever.
