Third Time's a Charm: Patriots Bring Back Hoyer

The Patriots (post-Tom Brady) have three quarterbacks on the roster; presumable starter Jarrett Stidham, Cody Kessler and Brian Hoyer.  The Patriots brought Hoyer back on Sunday after the veteran was released by the Colts.  The familiar face will be a nice insurance policy behind Stidham incase he struggles as a starter this season.

While everyone thinks Stidham is the man to run the offense in New England, it actually makes sense for Hoyer to be brought back.  The veteran knows everything about Belichick’s system and the 34-year-old could be a good mentor as Stidham continues to learn the game at the NFL level.

Hoyer was an undrafted free agent caught on with New England the first time back in 2009.  He has spent time backing up Brady for three seasons before moving on to the Cardinals, Browns, Texans, Bears and 49ers before he returned back to the Patriots after the Jimmy G trade.

Shop NBA Gear at Fanatics.comAccording to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Hoyer's contract with the Patriots is for $1.05 million.  The Colts are still on the hook for $2 million.  The Colts released Hoyer after they announced the signing of free agent quarterback Philip Rivers.

Hoyer joined the Colts before last season after he was released by the Patriots when Belichick decided to stick with Brady and Stidham last season. Stidham would go on to beat out Hoyer and was named the No. 2 QB behind Brady.  In four games with the Colts last season, Hoyer completed just 53.8% of his pass attempts last season, throwing for 372 yards with four touchdowns and four interceptions.

The Patriots are up against the cap and don’t have a lot of flexibility to bring in an experienced NFL quarterback.  On our latest “Fire the Muskets” podcast, our very own Matt Desrosiers was singing the praises of the thought the Patriots could bring in former Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston.

Winston could benefit from taking a page out of Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill’s book with free agency this season.  It feels like there is no market for Winston right now, and that could be because the Coronavirus scare that is crippling the United States.  Teams are not able to bring players in so they can see facilities and really get an in-depth look at an NFL free agent.  But Tannehill last season took a one-year deal with the Titans and rebuilt his value, and he cashed in this offseason.  He signed a four-year deal for $118 million before the start of free agency.

My feeling is if the Patriots had some financial flexibility they would bring in Winston.  But Belichick has a young quarterback in Stidham who he has confidence in and a backup who knows the system and will provide security in case Stidham fails this season.

Right now it’s unlikely the Patriots will look to add Winston.  While it is still early and the Patriots are making moves, it feels like Belichick has the men who’ll lead his team under center this season.  They’ll look to the draft and re-tool an aging roster and make me start to think, are we officially on Trevor Lawrence watch in New England? - NFL Jerseys and Gear
