BSS QB Big Board: Oklahoma | Jalen Hurts

SHARE:

The Patriots have seemingly been connected to every quarterback in this year's NFL Draft.  According to ESPN’s Draft guru Mel Kiper Jr., New England “likes” Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts.  What is not to like about the three-year starter, which included two years at Alabama.  The 2019 Heisman finalist and three-time College Football Playoff participant Hurts could bring a multi-dimensional style of offense to the pros.

“There’s word out that they (the Patriots) like Jalen Hurts from Oklahoma," Kiper said.  "He can be used in packages and do with him what they (the Ravens) did with Lamar Jackson his rookie year in Baltimore.”  The part about using him like Ravens' quarterback Jackson is interesting because it was reported that Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels was interested in coaching the NFL MVP.

Oklahoma Sooners gear at Fanatics.comThe Patriots shouldn’t use the No. 23 pick on Hurts, but with 12 draft picks in the draft they have the capital to move up into the second round round if they like Hurts that much.  If Hurts winds up with the Patriots he would round out a quarterback group that already consists of Jarrett Stidham and veteran Brian Hoyer.

There’s a lot to like about the Sooners quarterback.  As a senior he set career highs in passing yards with 3,851, passing TD’s with 32, rushing yards with 1,298 and rushing TD’s with 20.  The 2019 Heisman Trophy runner-up was also an All-Big 12 selection.

The NFL is always looking to replicate what other teams do, especially if it is successful.  Hurts, similar to Tua Tagovailoa, has garnered comparisons to Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson.  The Ravens built an offensive system that was catered to his dual-threat abilities.  The Sooners signal caller also excelled in college the same way.

The Patriots have a system that has been in place since head coach Bill Belichick took over 20 years ago.  A system that new Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady flourished in for his entire career.  The Patriots won’t change their whole offensive philosophy for one player, but they will cater it to Hurts abilities.  The Patriots catered their offense to Matt Cassel the year Brady missed the entire season with a knee injury.

Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley let Hurts run all over the competition last season.  That style of play we have never seen under a Belichick coach team.  The thought of unleashing Hurts and offering the fans of New England another style of play on the gridiron is tantalizing.

"I don’t think there’s a ceiling on my game," Hurts said.  The confidence that Hurts exudes is another reason bringing him to Foxboro could work if Belichick thinks Hurts is the long-term plan at quarterback.  Hurts is one of the most intriguing options in the draft and it wouldn’t cost them a lot in draft capital to get him.

“I think Hurts is the interesting guy right now at quarterback.  He’s moved up probably as much as anybody,” Kiper said.  “He’s a talent who is a winner.  He’s got great character as a quarterback that nobody would ever believe when you saw him at Alabama early on that he would be in this position.  He goes to Oklahoma after making progress as a passer at Alabama, he goes to Oklahoma and he has a big year”, said Kiper.

It is a copycat league and NFL franchises saw what Jackson did this season for the Ravens.  Hurts was impressive last year at the collegiate level.  His game is one that will translate to the NFL level.  The question for me is whether his game translates to the Patriots offensive system.  I would love to see the Patriots draft Hurts and usher in the next wave of great Patriots teams.
