BSS QB Big Board: Utah State | Jordan Love

SHARE:

Do you love the idea of the Patriots drafting Utah State quarterback Jordan Love in the first round?  Ahh, see what I did there?  All kidding aside, the Patriots have been linked to Love for a few weeks now and some draft experts are saying the Pats could take him at No. 23.

Love has raw talents that head coach Bill Belichick can develop and fine tune while in the Patriots system.  The question is, do you spend No. 23 to get Love?  If the Patriots draft Love he wouldn’t have to start right away.  The Patriots will need to develop him as a professional quarterback at the NFL level.  The Patriots do have Brian Hoyer in camp and he could be the starter this season as the Patriots develop Love.

There are expectations that come with being a first round pick, and considering we are living the post-Tom Brady life in New England it is uncertain as to whether Patriots fans will be patient with a quarterback not playing right away.

Shop for Kid's NFL Gear at Fanatics! Last season the Patriots selected Arizona State wide receiver N’Keal Harry with their first round pick.  The hype train began immediately in Foxboro on what type of big-bodied target Brady would have to throw to.  Harry missed half of his rookie season due to a hamstring injury.  He was immediately an underwhelming piece in the Patriots offense.  The Patriots fan base grew impatient with Harry due to his injury and the lofty expectations that comes with being a first round selection.

If Love wants to avoid those rumblings from the Patriots fan base, he needs to win them over immediately.  Love will be in a tough position if drafted in the first round, but if he quickly buys into "The Patriot Way", he will start to win the admiration of a passionate but yet sometimes critical fan base.

The Patriots have clearly done their homework on Love.  He and many others have been evaluated by the Patriots front office and coaching staff.

While at Utah State, Love was inconsistent under the huddle.  Love was good during the 2018 season where the Aggies won 11 games and he threw 32 touchdowns and 3,567 yards.  His 2018 season put Love into the National spotlight.  However 2019 wasn’t good.  The Aggies fired their coaching staff, they lost nine starters and Love through 17 interceptions.

It is possible that the inconsistency within Love’s game could have been directly impacting by the turnover in the Aggies coaching staff during his senior year.  Love has the tools that can translate to the pro level, and coming to New England could be exactly what he needs.

There are teams other than New England interested in Love, including the Miami Dolphins and New Orleans Saints.

While the Patriots are scouting Love, it could merely just be they're doing the simple due diligence of scouting talented players.  New England has 12 draft picks next weekend and it won’t be surprising to see Belichick take a signal caller in the later rounds.  The Patriots have so many needs on their roster, unless they think Love is the true heir as the face of the franchise, they should use the No. 23 on someone else who will impact the roster in the immediate short term and benefit them for the long term.

If the Patriots could land Love later in the draft, I would be for them drafting the Aggies product.  But seeing the demand to always find that next quarterback, the odds of him dropping to Day 2 could be slim.  The one thing regarding this years draft is there seems to be more uncertainty as to what teams will do, due to the lack of being able to have a traditional offseason.  Love is a winner and could bring competition to camp along aside Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer.
