GronkMania: It's Time to Gronk Spike the Persona

Rob Gronkowski is the reigning, the defending and undisputed... WWE 24/7 champion. I’ll need a minute as a roll my eyes.

The former Patriots tight end was the host of this year’s very unique WrestleMania. The show of the immortals took place as planned despite the COVID-19 pandemic that has halted all major gatherings and sports across the world.

While this year’s WrestleMania was filmed with no fans in the crowd, the WWE brass looked to add more fanfare to the event and they hired Gronkowski as the host of the Show of Shows.
The future Hall-of-Fame tight end, who is a CBD entrepreneur, a NFL analyst for Fox and a contestant on “The Masked Singer”. You can now add WWE 24/7 champion to that resume.

If you don’t know what the WWE 24/7 championship is for the non-wrestling fans, I’ll take a minute to go over it. It was a new championship introduced back in 2019 as a gimmick title that frequently changes hands on all WWE programming. The WWE had a championship similar to this years ago with the former and now retired WWE Hardcore championship.

Since the creation of the championship numerous lower card WWE superstars have won this, shall I call it, the least prestigious championship in WWE history?

In addition to WWE superstars holding the championship, non-WWE performers have held claim to this gimmick championship. NASCAR driver Kyle Busch and Celtics Enes Kanter have also wore this gold around their waist.

The Gronkowski to the WWE storyline should have been on everyone’s radar the second he hosted his beach party at the Super Bowl. WWE superstars Triple H and Stephanie McMahon were in attendance and posted a picture with Gronkowski at the event.

The fun-loving former Patriots tight end has been partying since he joined the NFL and that has continued post-NFL career. His overall popularity has not diminished amongst fans, but there are fans that are tired of his schtick.

You cannot argue that he was truly one of the best to play his position in the NFL. Gronkowski will be punching his ticket into Canton in the near future for everything he has done while with New England. Gronkowski retired in 2019 after the Super Bowl leaving a major hole in the Patriots offense last season. “In order to do something bigger in life … I felt like I had to get away from the game and focus on my health,” Gronkowski said, according to CBS Sports.

When the WWE announced that Gronkowski would be joining their organization I personally was not surprised. Gronkowski joining the WWE has been teased even prior to his retirement. The WWE announced that they had a deal with the former All-Pro tight end and he would make his debut on the March 20 SmackDown on Fox.

When the WWE announced his signing, they announced he would be the host of WrestleMania this year. “I’ve been to sold out WrestleMania’s in front of 80,000 people and now I’m here in front of zero people and I’m still hype baby,” Gronkowski said on SmackDown, according to “But this time, I will be hosting WrestleMania, because I’m ready for anything”, said Gronkowski.

This whole Gronkowski to the WWE is an absolute joke, and personally I am all set with the dude. I will forever be thankful for “Gronk” the football player for the New England Patriots, but this constant frat boy persona, honestly, it sucks.

He continues to act like an overgrown man child and he is just absolutely uncomfortable to watch. The WWE is making a mistake with hiring him, but since Vince McMahon promotes entertainment and not wrestling, Gronkowski is in for the long haul with the WWE.

So while Gronkowski is dancing it up on “The Masked Singer” and smashing the Lego head of Steve Harvey on New Year’s Eve, Gronkowski just looks like a total embarrassment acting like a frat boy every day of his life. But, he’s doing so making more money than I will ever fathom so kudos to number 87.

Having Gronkowski come out and dance and “host” WrestleMania was a huge mistake on the WWE’s part. The WWE was already doing something different by continuing to hold their biggest event of the year by having it with no crowd. The lack of the crowd was evident while watching this weekend and at times made the show unwatchable. They did not need to add in the antics of Gronkowski. But people are talking about it, it is still creating a buzz and that is all that matters to the WWE.

The last image of Gronkowski for Patriots fans was the 29-yard catch in Super Bowl LIII. The touchdown was the game’s only and would put the cherry on top for one of the game’s best tight ends. While the speculation will run rampant as to whether he will want to come out of retirement and try and re-start his career remains unlikely. For now we can get our Gronkowski fill watching WWE programing.
