Patriots Add UDFA QB J’Mar Smith

The speculation of whether or not the New England Patriots would draft a quarterback was one of the hot topics out of Foxboro for this year's NFL Draft.  Coming into the weekend, the Patriots were faced with their first draft since Tom Brady moved on from the organization.  The Patriots have former fourth round pick Jarrett Stidham under contract and former Brady backup Brian Hoyer on the roster.  The narrative wasn’t so much if the Patriots would select a quarterback but it was when.

The Patriots, in true draft day reputation, didn’t do what we expected and did not draft a quarterback with any of their draft selections.  The Patriots were seemingly connected to almost every quarterback in the draft, and with only two on the roster it was almost a guaranteed certainty they would spend draft capital on the position.

Instead, Head Coach Bill Belichick went another route.  He filled his roster through the draft on true needs on both sides of the ball.  Following the draft the Patriots finally added a quarterback, they are expected to add former Louisiana Tech quarterback J’Mar Smith as an undrafted free agent, per Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network.

Smith, who was a three-year starter for the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs, has been getting better each season.  During his senior year he completed 64.3% of his passes, threw 18 touchdowns to five interceptions.  He is not a true-dual threat quarterback, but has a big arm he relies on and can scramble to keep plays alive.

Coming out of high school, Smith was a unanimous three-star recruit.  He turned down offers to play at Memphis and Mississippi to play at Louisiana Tech.

He did get into some trouble in his senior year and was suspended due to an athletic department policy violation.  He would only go onto miss one game, but the embarrassment was enough for Smith who just focused on the fact he let his team down.  Smith led his team in his final game with the Bulldogs to a shutout win over Miami in the Walk On’s Independence Bowl.

During his time at Louisiana Tech, Smith threw for 9,523 yards with 51 touchdowns to 21 interceptions.  His former coach Skip Holtz had nothing but praise for his signal-caller,  “I don’t know going out you throw for over 10,000 yards, you’re third in every statistical category in school history, what he was able to accomplish.  More than anything else, just the way that he’s grown as a man as a quarterback as a person, I think he’s a really good football player but we’ve got a special bond and I love him.”

Smith will come to New England and he’ll get an opportunity to compete.  He is the third quarterback on the roster for now, unless the team signs a veteran to accompany Stidham and Hoyer.  If Smith can’t crack the 53-man roster there is a chance he could get stashed on the practice squad and develop within the Patriots system at practice through the entire season.
