Rory-DJ Versus Fowler-Wolff Set For Next Week

The PGA Tour is still about a month away from restarting the schedule for the Tour, but we will get some golf on May 17 with the TaylorMade Driving Relief.  The charity event, which will be aired on NBC Sports, will feature the team of Rickie Fowler-Matthew Wolff versus Dustin Johnson-Rory McIlroy.  The foursome will play in a televised $3 million charity skins match to support the COVID-19 efforts.

This event will come one week before the charity golf match between Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Tom Brady and Peyton Manning.  These players being able to bring some entertainment to  people across the globe during this pandemic will provide a mental release.  The players will tee-off from the Seminole Golf Club in Juno Beach, where they will feature the $3 million purse that will be provided by UnitedHealth Group to which all of the money will go to the American Nurses Foundation and CDC Foundation to aid them during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The players involved are all TaylorMade players, McIlroy and Johnson have 38 PGA wins between them versus Fowler and Wolff.  Fowler is a five-time Tour winner and his teammate Wolff was an NCAA individual champion.  Fowler and Wolff will have their hands full with McIlroy, who is ranked No. 1 in the world.

How will these players look as they return to the links?  McIlroy told Fox News contributor Jim Gray that he believes the time off may impact his short-game more so than hitting the fairways.  As McIlroy looks to play next week with Johnson, he told Gray that he picked up a club for the first time last week to prepare.  This was the first time he picked up a club in seven weeks.  “It’s not necessarily the long game that you’re rusty with.  It’s more around the greens.  The little intricate shots.  The chipping, the putting, the feel.  Just getting your feel back” said McIlroy.

Fowler is looking forward to getting back on the course.  He just recently played a round with Justin Thomas this month at the Medalist Golf Club in South Florida.  The two men played a throwback match where they used vintage persimmon clubs and balls.  These two players have teed it up a few times since the PGA cancelled events.  Fowler and Thomas played in a ‘Lefty Championship’, so Fowler has been out there playing the game he loves.

The wildcard in this whole matchup will be Wolff, the 21-year-old who will partner with Fowler.  Wolff won his third start as a professional winning at the 3M Open in Minnesota.  “I do have a lot of confidence, internally, in my game, but I don’t show it," Wolff said.  "But I want to walk on the tee like Brooks Koepka does where he just looks like he knows he’s the best player.  Rory McIlroy walks that way.  You can tell that they think they’re the man.”

The PGA Tour has been on hiatus due to the coronavirus since March 12 when the PGA suspended play.  The PGA Tour is expected to resume play at the Charles Schwab Challenge on June 11.  “When I heard about this event, I couldn’t get involved fast enough.  It’s special to be able to have an impact and raise charitable contributions through our sport and to do it with Matthew as my partner.  I know how much I have missed sports, and golf especially, so to be one of the first events returning to television is very exciting,” said Fowler.  The four men will tee off next week in the beginning of sports being introduced to fans across the globe.
