What Do You Expect From Woods/Manning Vs. Mickelson/Brady?

There is nothing better than the smell of the fresh cut grass at the golf course and the sound of the driver pinging and that perfect shot down the center of the fairway.  It feels like forever since we’ve had any professional golf on TV and recreational golf depending on the state you live in.  This month we will finally get some golf and for a good cause.  This month, we will get to experience “The Match: Champions for Charity” that will feature two of golf’s greatest player and two of the NFL’s greatest quarterbacks.

Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Tom Brady and Peyton Manning will hit the links, likely in Florida, to raise money for COVID-19 relief.  We are going to get this for free and it will air live on TNT and be available on Bleacher Report and House of Highlights.

While the exact date hasn’t been officially announced, it is expected they will tee off around Memorial Day and the course that continues to come up is The Medalist in Hobe Sound.  This track is absolutely beautiful, and according to its website it pays homage to the natural preserve it rests on, saying “each hole offering peaceful and transcendental views of the native Hobe Sound landscape.”

The teams will be interesting as Woods and Manning will be a pairing and Mickelson and Brady will be another.  Woods and Manning have played in pro-ams several times including the Memorial Tournament and the Wells Fargo Championship.  Brady has played on the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro Am in the past as well.  Both Manning and Brady are pretty good at swinging the sticks; I mean of course they are.  Manning and Brady have single-digit handicaps, listed most recently as an 8 for each player.  That essentially means they shoot around an 80 per round of play.

Woods and Mickelson previously met in a head-to-head match up back in November 2018 in Las Vegas.  Mickelson won the winner-take-all purse of $9 million.

I love the idea of this foursome and can’t wait until they finally tee off for this matchup.  This is for a great cause and the sports fan needs something to watch and this should bring a ton of eyes on the tv screen.

What should we expect?  The question will be is how they actually play and if they just play a typical round of golf or they add some other things to the game.  Maybe a scramble for a few holes or even maybe they tie something in football related for the four players.  Personally, I want to see a traditional round of golf, between four of the greatest athletes within their respective sports.

You know that it will be competitive, Woods and Mickelson will bring out the best in each other, while Brady, who is as competitive as they come, will not allow Manning to beat him on the golf course.  The long-time rivals in both golf and on the gridiron will have an audience that will be captivated to say the very least.

I am also looking forward to the trash talking that will be going on during this round of golf.  You are getting four alpha males who have been titans in their respective sports who are as competitive as they come.  “There has been a little bit of trash talking already, a little bit of banter back and forth", Woods said to Golf Digest.  "It’ll be like that when we compete but it won’t be as rough as what we have in our text exchange”.

What I don’t want to see is these guys wearing medical masks on the course because this is supposed to be an escape from the coronavirus world we currently live in.  I do want them to practice the appropriate social distancing measures to make this event safe, but we need some normalcy out of this matchup in a world that may never feel normal, at least for a very long time.  We should expect the players to get coronavirus testing as a requirement as well as the others who will be involved to make this event happen.  I also want to see these guys bet a few bucks between holes with the money going to charity of course.  When buddies get together on the links there’s always a few gentlemen bets made and this should be no different.

I am ready to lite up a cigar, make a Hendricks and tonic and kick back and watch some golf and for a good cause.  This is going to be special for many reasons.  We’re going to get sports again and these guys are using their platform to raise money and do good for people who desperately need it.  While many in New England will be resentful towards Brady because he is on his way to “Tompa Bay” with Gronk, true Patriots fans shouldn’t root for Manning under any circumstances.  I want to see Brady and Mickelson take this one home, and seeing as Mickelson is fresh off his W against Woods in their one-on-one matchup, he would love to hold two wins over him even if this is for charity.
