Will Belichick Give Blake Bortles A Look?

Free agent Blake Bortles spent last season as the backup to Jared Goff in Los Angeles.  Back in March when free agency began, it was reported that Bortles was “weighing several” options, but they haven’t seemed to come to fruition.  The 28-year-old former first round pick is still on the market looking for a home in 2020.

After spending 2019 with the Los Angeles Rams, would it be far fetched to think he could ultimately end up in New England?  Not entirely.  The Patriots appear to have their man in Jarrett Stidham, but why not take a flyer on a former first round pick and let him be the backup to the young quarterback out of Auburn?

The Patriots will go into camp right now with four quarterbacks; Stidham, veteran Brian Hoyer, and two undrafted free agents in J’Mar Smith and Brian Lewerke.  The team has shown their support of Stidham by not adding a veteran signal caller - at least not yet.

Bortles could make sense for the Patriots if he wants to come to New England.  If he wants to play for Belichick in Foxboro, the team has a connection to the former first round pick.  This offseason the Patriots added Bortles former offensive coordinator from his rookie year to the coaching staff.  Jedd Fisch was hired to be an offensive assistant this year.  He was Bortles' OC in 2014 - the Jaguars went 3-13 that season.

After spending last season backing up Rams starter Jared Goff, he has an opportunity to see what free agency will bring him.  Bortles was paid only $1 million last season and it’s reasonable to think he could be brought into New England at the same price.  With the free agent quarterback market now cleared up, Belichick could opt for Bortles or see if another quarterback could shake free around June 1st.

I know that as people read this they’re going to say "we don’t need Bortles!"  The idea of him coming to New England isn’t crazy.  The team could benefit from bringing in another veteran to help push and give Stidham competition in camp this pre-season.  Belichick has had high praise for Bortles before the NFL Draft and during his time with the Jags.  In fact, according to Dov Kleiman the Patriots were interested in drafting Bortles.

The thought of bringing in another quarterback shouldn’t be dismissed.  The team earlier in the offseason showed interest in Kyle Allen.  The Redskins ended up trading for the former Panthers starter last season.  If Belichick was interested in Allen, 24, it’s not hard to think he could look to Bortles.

The whole idea isn’t exactly far-fetched considering on paper it looks like the team could use more depth at quarterback.  Whoever ends up being the starter for Week 1, one thing is for sure.  Belichick will have his new quarterback and team ready for Brian Flores and the Miami Dolphins.
