Breaking News: The Patriots Sign Cam Newton

SHARE:

If you would have said six months ago I would be writing an article saying that the Patriots would be signing former Carolina Panthers quarterback I would have called you crazy.  As I sit here on Sunday night getting ready to relax and have a cocktail to end my hectic weekend, Bill Belichick just nonchalantly broke the internet.  The Patriots have indeed signed the former No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.  The deal that Newton has inked in Foxboro is a one-year deal that is incentive-laden for the 31-year-old quarterback.

The deal for Newton is considered to be the “bare minimum”, but can be worth up to $7.5 million in total salary, according to Ian Rapport of the NFL Network.

Newton is now the man to replace the GOAT, Tom Brady, who has since left the Patriots and is now with Tampa Bay with Rob Gronkowski.  This deal for the Patriots and Newton is a low risk and the ultimate high reward for both sides.  Newton can take this season and be under the guidance of the best head coach in the NFL in Bill Belichick and if he can produce the numbers he is accustomed to putting up, he can attempt to cash in free agency next season.

This move comes at the expense of seeing Jarrett Stidham under center this season.  Stidham quickly rose to the head of the depth charts once Brady decided he was going to take his talents to “Tompa Bay”.  Stidham will now get another year of development and the team can assess where the young quarterback is from a development standpoint next season.

Newton is continuing to rehab from foot surgery.  He also had a physical back in March that was coordinated by the Panthers and Newton’s agency.  According to Schefter, Newton is “hungrier than ever and eager for the next opportunity.”

The Patriots will now go from one NFL MVP in Brady to the former 2015 NFL MVP in Newton.  During that season he accounted for 45 touchdowns and led the Panthers to the Super Bowl where they lost to Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos.

For the Patriots, this is an intriguing move and one that many thought could happen but were unsure if it would ever come to fruition.  In New England this season, we will now get to see Newton throw to Julian Edelman, Mohammad Sanu, N’Keal Harry amongst the other young weapons that are going to be in camp.

The Patriots quickly go back to becoming the favorites to win the AFC East again in a division that will feature Josh Allen, Tua Tagovailoa and Sam Darnold.  No matter the youth coming out of the East from the quarterback position one thing remains supreme, the Patriots will forever be the favorites while Belichick is leading the organization.

Who is ready for the post-game press conferences where Newton will be dressed as combination of my Portuguese vovó and Rip Taylor?  There will be so many storylines coming out of New England with Newton as QB1, where the casual might just forget all about what’s his name in Florida?

It’s Cam Newton SZN and we are about to see something really different this season, and I am excited for it.  Man, Bill “Bleepin’” Belichick has done it again.  LFG.
