Off the Rails: Michael Keaton Coming Back As Batman?

Tell me something, my friend, have you ever danced with the Devil in the pale moonlight?  The Joker pulls the trigger and shoots Batman and the rivalry between the two in the Tim Burton series explodes.  That was one of the best lines from the Batman movie starring Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson that came out in 1989.

After nearly 30 years, Keaton is in talks to return to his role as Batman in the upcoming Warner Bros. film “The Flash”.  On our latest Red Sox Podcast to be Named Later, the guys talked about Keaton reprising the role of Batman.

We’ve seen Keaton, George Clooney, Val Kilmer, Christian Bale, Ben Affleck and Adam West all as the Caped Crusader.  I can not begin to tell you how excited I am that Keaton will be back in this role.  I know that he will not be the same Batman he was back in 1989 and in the sequel Batman Returns, but he was arguably the best Batman we’ve seen since West.

In my opinion, Keaton was the best Batman because he set the tone for the series.  Now, Bale was a great Batman during the three films he starred in, but without Keaton there would be no Bale under the mask.  Bale’s Batman character and movie series did a very good job telling the story about Bruce Wayne, which is why I would argue Bale was a better Wayne than Batman.

It is not official that Keaton is signing on for the upcoming film “The Flash”, nor do we know how big or even small his role is, it’s exciting nonetheless.  Here is what we know so far, the plot will introduce us to the idea of a multiverse surrounding the DC Comics.  That concept was originally created to explain the different contradictions with the characters over the last few decades.

“The Flash” should be inspired by the Flashpoint storyline in the upcoming movie.  That storyline has fans of the DC World abuzz, and now coupled with Keaton potentially coming onboard, we could be on the verge of an amazing film in 2022.  According to reports, Keaton reprising his role as Batman compares to Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury in the Marvel franchise.

“You wanna get nuts? C’mon lets get nuts”

We first were introduced to Keaton as Batman back in 1989 in Burton’s blockbuster film as the same name of the main character.  The film was an absolute critical and financial success and it began to spawn off superhero movies we have come to love and enjoy today.

Keaton would go on to do two films as Batman/Bruce Wayne under the Burton umbrella.  However, after Burton was replaced during the third movie by director Joel Schumacher, Keaton quit the series and we began to see new Batmans in future films.

Fans have been clamoring for Keaton to return to The Batman series for years and see him playing an older Batman/Bruce Wayne.  It now feels like fans are getting their wish and Keaton is finally coming back to the role he once set the tone with in this iconic franchise.  Just like the Joker said in the 1989 movie, “the pen is truly mightier than the sword”.  Fans need Keaton to grab that pen and sign on the dotted line.
