Red Sox New Prospect Blaze Jordan Has Tremendous Power

The Red Sox drafted Blaze Jordan with the No. 89 pick in the third-round of the 2020 MLB Draft.  Jordan, 17, is a third baseman out of DeSoto High School in Mississippi with tremendous power.  One of the youngest players in the draft at 17, he, like the rest of the players in the draft lost his season year due to the coronavirus pandemic. He went on to finish his high school career with a .440 batting average, 131 hits, 98 RBIs, 33 doubles, 19 home runs, and six triples through four years at DeSoto High School.

The 6-foot-2, 220 pound Jordan brings tremendous power with him to the Red Sox minor league system.  He is well known for his YouTube videos displaying his power at a young age.  He won the 2019 High School Home Run Derby during MLB All-Star weekend last year, where he was pictured celebrating with Mookie Betts at the end.

Red Sox amateur scouting director Paul Toboni and CBO Chaim Bloom had specific high school players in mind with legitimate upside potential.  Toboni was surprised that Jordan fell to the third round.  “He has got some innate attributes that are very hard to teach and how he generates bat speed, how he’s able to process information out of the pitcher’s hand and transfer that to mechanical action, it’s super unique.”

Toboni first took notice of Blaze’s unique power when he saw the young player hit in a showcase in Georgia.  The Red Sox would continue to watch and follow Jordan, and the more that they watched the more they felt he could become a well-rounded offensive player.  “You don’t see it very often, but when you do see it, it sticks out to you.  When it’s coming from a 16 or 17 year old kid, it really sticks out to you,” said Toboni on Blaze’s raw power at such a young age.

Jordan, who has been a YouTube star showing off his power since he was 11, has also drawn comparisons to the Phillies' Bryce Harper, even being dubbed “the next Bryce Harper.”  Which if he turns out to be similar to Harper, the Red Sox would surely take that upside.

Now he comes with some question marks. While we’re focused on his power potential there are other things to look at with Jordan.  He projects more as a first baseman than a third baseman.  He’s been called an unpolished defender which will likely result in him sliding across the diamond.  Jordan will have time to learn and develop those skills in the Red Sox system.  Until then the Red Sox have some players with hype in their system and Jordan is someone we’ll hope to see hit bombs over the Green Monster for many years in a Red Sox uniform.

Now if MLB and the MLBPA can just figure out how to play this season, but that’s a whole other story.
