The Celtics Need to Lock Up Tatum

The Celtics have an emerging superstar in Jayson Tatum and potentially he will be the next face of the Boston sports landscape.  The former No. 3 overall draft pick is now a key piece in the how Danny Ainge will build the Boston Celtics moving forward.  According to ESPN’s NBA Insider Brian Windhorst, the Celtics are “most likely” going to offer Tatum a max contract “after the season ends.”

“If Jayson Tatum is the superstar that they envisioned when they began this whole rebuilding process when they traded Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce for all of those draft picks hoping to land a player like this, we could see ‘Glory Days’ for the Celtics again” said Windhorst.  He would go on to add, “but it’s very much up in the air, and I’m gonna tell ya, they’re gonna have to pay him like it because after this season ends, he is going to get most likely a max contract.  They’re going to bet that he becomes that player.”

Tatum is averaging 23.6 points per game this season with 7.1 rebounds and a 39.8 percent from three-point range prior to the NBA ceasing operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  The 22-year-old Tatum was showing glimpses of becoming a superstar, prior to the break he was named an NBA All-Star team for the first time and earned the Eastern Conference Player of the Month in February.

The Celtics in recent years have done a great job in locking up their core talent that Ainge has brought in through the NBA Draft.  Ainge signed Marcus Smart to a four-year extension back in the summer of 2018 and last season signed Jaylen Brown to a four-year deal worth $115 million last October.  It is time to lock up Tatum and continue to build around this young core in Boston.

It will be interesting what that type of deal will truly look like as the league and teams have lost revenue from the coronavirus shutdown.  The NBA has a structured program on how players can re-sign with their respective clubs based off the the percentage of the cap.  With the season shut down for months it will almost be a guarantee that the cap will come down some for the next NBA season.

Tatum, who was absolutely tearing up the parquet prior to the shutdown, will be relied upon heavily as the Celtics look to the playoffs once the league resumes play this summer.

Tatum was criticized by Boston radio media for admitting during the quarantine that he didn’t have a basketball hoop and hadn’t shot a basketball.  Since the media criticism he has since added a hoop to his property and has been shooting the rock to get ready for when the team begins practicing in the near future.

The Celtics appear close to be returning to working out, at least in Massachusetts, as Governor Charlie Baker will allow professional sports teams to begin working out in June.

Tatum will be looked at by most as the go to guy in Boston as they head into the playoffs and finish this season.  They will need Tatum and the others to be sharp upon their return with the likes of the 76ers, Raptors and Bucks potentially looming in the future as the C’s quest for banner No. 18 will begin very soon.  Ainge needs to lock up Tatum following the season because right now, he is the only superstar the city of Boston currently has.  Sign Jayson Tatum.
