Cam Newton Needs to Be Himself in New England

SHARE:

There is a very good chance that when Cam Newton scores his first rushing touchdown as a member of the New England Patriots he will raise his fists to his chest and pull them backwards and do the "Superman" motion.  Despite all his injuries throughout his career, he is not the Man of Steel, but the "Superman" motion has been a trademark of his personality and career.

Will Newton be able to be himself and celebrate while in New England?  Will his new head coach Bill Belichick tell him to be professional at all times?  The league needs to be fun and these players need to be allowed to celebrate as they see fit when they make a big play, intercept a pass or score a touchdown.  Newton has always been a polarizing personality since he entered the league.  From his celebrations on the field to his post-game wardrobe, the fans of the Patriots will be entertained by their new quarterback.

This week on 98.5 The Sports Hub, “Felger and Mazz” were critical of the Newton regarding whether or not he should celebrate touchdowns now that he is in New England.  Felger raised the notion that the Patriots have a “culture” and that he likes that the Patriots don’t celebrate after big plays during a game.  “No Superman, I don’t want to see Superman, Bill doesn’t want to see that”, said Felger.
I understand that the Patriots have a culture in place and it is part of the Patriot Way, but when an organization signs Newton, they’re getting the whole package.  They're getting the “Superman”, the wild and crazy outfits before and after the game, and hopefully a healthy quarterback who’ll be able to play the whole season.  The fact that the Patriots have signed Newton and he is the quarterback post-Tom Brady is exciting on so many different levels.

Felger and Mazz are completely off with their take on Newton.  Let Newton be himself, who cares if he dabs, does the superman or anything else.  If Belichick is the greatest head coach of all time then he should be able to manage his new quarterback, especially if he takes it too far whether it’s on social media or on the field.  Felger and Mazz's take in my opinion was not racially motivated, I do think they were being genuine on the Patriots culture and the Patriot Way.

If you want to make a legitimate argument and pose the question whether Newton will follow the Patriot Way, that is valid but what has he done in his career that would warrant anyone to question his commitment? Newton will fit in New England if we allow him to fit in. If the media is all over Newton because a “Superman” motion, it’s time to get over yourselves. There has been nothing during his time in Carolina that would make us question the type of player he will be on the field.
If you have a problem with what Newton is wearing on and off the field, that’s on you and it does not reflect the player he’ll be on the field.  Both Felger and Mazz have taken a lot of backlash this week for their comments on Newton.  I don’t agree with them on this take, because we need to let these guys be who they are and show off their personalities while playing at a high level.  This year in New England, Belichick will not stop Newton from being himself on and off the field.

The Patriots culture of winning will continue because the best football mind to ever grace the sidelines will lead his team and quarterback.  Belichick will not care about the touchdown celebrations, he only cares whether they win every Sunday and play in February for the Lombardi trophy.

Was It a No-Brainer For the Patriots to Sign Newton?
