Yasiel Puig to the Red Sox?

The Red Sox have room on their player pool roster to add some depth to the club and according to Jon Heyman, the club is showing interest in free agent outfielder Yasiel Puig.  The free agent outfielder has reportedly been holding out for a Major League contract if he were to play with a team this season.  If Chaim Bloom were to sign Puig, where does he fit on the roster?

The Red Sox have Andrew Benintendi, Jackie Bradley Jr., J.D. Martinez, Kevin Pillar and Alex Verdugo on the 40-man roster.  If you look at the roster on paper there really isn’t a fit for Puig on the Red Sox.  This year is already proving to be different and teams have the ability to have a 60-man player pool to choose from in case of injury or player contracting COVID-19 once the season begins.

The team has an all left-handed hitting starting outfield with Benintendi, Bradley Jr., and Verdugo; only Pillar and Martinez are right-handed hitters.  While Pillar will provide excellent depth in the outfield and will be able to play all three outfield positions, the Red Sox would be wise to add another proven right-handed bat to the roster.  Puig could also provide some insurance for Verdugo, who is coming off a back injury that sidelined him last year, and he can provide pop to the offense if Bradley Jr. struggles to start the season.

Puig has a reputation in the league as someone who is emotional and has a potential volatile personality within the clubhouse.  Given that this season is only going to offer 60 games in 66 days, teams should be looking to add all the potential depth to their rosters as possible.  If Bloom were to finalize a deal with Puig I would look at this as a low risk, high reward free agent signing.  He doesn’t have to come in here to be a featured bat in the lineup.  He could come to Boston, produce some numbers in a shortened season also while showing other prospective clubs heading into the offseason he was on his best behavior while in Boston.

Last season the Reds and Pirates got into a bench clearing brawl with Puig moments after it was announced he was traded to the Cleveland Indians.  His final moments in a Reds uniform would be memorable and quite eventful for the slugger.  The brawl got underway because the two teams were exchanging fastballs at each other.  So in the ninth inning, Reds reliever Amir Garrett had enough.  After giving up a three-run homer he began to chirp at the Pirates bench.  Garrett would then sprint to the Pirates dugout and the donnybrook began to ensue.  Puig kept the chaos going after learning he was traded, Puig and Garrett were like the Legion of Doom out on the diamond going after everyone and anyone.
The slugging right fielder ended up hitting .267 last season with 24 home runs, 148 hits and 84 RBI between both Cleveland and Cincinnati.  Puig has the ability to improve any team's lineup, especially the Red Sox, who are in need of right-handed hitters.  He has the ability of a player who should have a $100 million dollar contract, but he hasn’t instilled the confidence of GMs to give him that kind of commitment.  In the financial environment we are in right now, Puig would be wise to take a one-year deal from a team like Boston, because if he shows he can hit and be someone they can rely on, he could provide insurance for a team that could see Martinez opt out of his contract this offseason.
