Red Sox Showing Strong Interest in Zack Godley?

The Red Sox have been connected to numerous free agents as they continue to look for depth for their starting rotation.  At the end of last week, they were connected to former Astros and Blue Jays eighth Aaron Sanchez.

According to Chris Cotillo of the Red Sox, along with multiple other teams, are expressing interest in right-hander Zack Godley (pictured above), who was released by the Tigers on Monday.

The Tigers signed Godley this offseason as a non-roster player who could have earned up to $3 million in total salary, but was cut loose.  Reports out of Detroit was that the Tigers weren't planning to add Godley to their roster for Opening Day.  Godley, who had an opt-out clause prior to Opening Day, now has a chance to hook on with a team prior to the start of the season.  Now that he is free to sign elsewhere there is a belief that the Red Sox stand a chance to sign him due to their immediate need in their starting rotation.

Godley, 30, pitched for the Diamondbacks in 2017-2018, posting an ERA of 4.10 in 57 starts.  The wheels came off last season in Arizona which prompted the Diamondbacks to designate him for assignment.  He was scooped up by the Blue Jays in August and pitched well for the them in 16 relief innings, striking out 12 and he had a 3.94 ERA.

The Red Sox should certainly look to add Godley for the 60-game season.  Chaim Bloom has added depth to his roster all offseason and even though the options to choose from aren't the household names Red Sox fans want to hear, he is still trying to add depth.  The Red Sox are going to start this season with Nathan Eovaldi, Martin Perez and Ryan Weber as their top three starters in the rotation.  They will be able to add Eduardo Rodriguez to the mix once he is cleared to return due to testing positive for the coronavirus.

Adding Godley is a no brainer, he's healthy, he's an actual starting pitcher and would slot well into this rotation.  The question will be is he a true quality upside starter that new Red Sox pitching coach Dave Bush can work with this season?

Brian Johnson is a candidate to be the fourth starter or even an opener for the team while the fifth spot in the rotation could go to lefty Matt Hall, who has thrown the ball very well at Summer Camp.  In fact, Manager Ron Roenicke has been "really impressed" with Hall.

Red Sox fans shouldn't look at adding Godley and grumble like they have been over some of the names Bloom has brought into camp.  I have been optimistic on the arms that have been brought into camp.  Maybe this is a desperation move for Bloom, but based off the money he had to initially spend this offseason, he has added depth on the cheap hoping to re-create some Rays roster magic.

With this being a 60-game season, the Red Sox need arms for the rotation and maybe Godley could catch lightning in a bottle for the club for eight to ten starts this season.
