One Player, Each Team - AFC South Edition

SHARE:

We keep rolling through the divisions to get you draft ready.  Today we will head down to the AFC South to highlight one player, from each team, for your squad.  Let's get moving.

AFC South

Houston Texans - Brandin Cooks

I almost can't believe Brandin Cooks is the player I am highlighting here, but the value is too good.  Cooks is coming off of a really bad year, marred by injuries.  And there is no guarantee he avoids injury this year, but the value is too good to pass up.  Cooks is two years removed from four straight seasons with at least 1000 receiving yards and at least five touchdowns.  Now with a fresh start in Houston, who no longer rosters DeAndre Hopkins, his main competition is Will Fuller and Kenny Stills.  Fuller has NEVER played a full 16 games, and Stills has not since 2017.  With injury riddled receivers around him, and currently going off the board as roughly the 33rd wide receiver, Cooks is a fantastic option for a Flex/WR4 spot on your team.

Indianapolis Colts - Team Defense

I always feel the need to highlight at least one team defense, so the Colts get to be that team this year.  You may be thinking to yourself, really, the Colts?  Well if you are one of those fantasy players who doesn't make a run at a top tier defense like the 49ers, waiting until real late and snagging a team like the Colts is an excellent option.  Last year the Colts defense quietly scored double digit points nine times throughout the year.  Double digit points out of your defense is all you can ask for.  And they did that without one single defensive, or special teams touchdown.  Now with DeForest Buckner on the line, and just a little more luck, the Colts very quietly can become a cheap draft day selection, that turns into a top 10 unit.

Jacksonville Jaguars - Chris Thompson

Chris Thompson was already on PPR League radar's before the release of Leonard Fournette.  Now with Fournette out of the picture, Thompson needs to be on everyone's radar.  He will not be the starter as the bulk of the work should still go to Ryquell Armstead to start the year.  However, it is clear the Jaguars are going full Tank for Trevor mode and will not be good.  Game scripts will consistently favor a passing attack for Jacksonville, making Thompson the main benefactor.  There is also the relationship with his former head coach, Jay Gruden, who has become the offensive coordinator for the Jaguars and loved throwing Thompson the ball in Washington.  Thompson has the chance to be a quality flex play every single week, warranting a look on draft day starting around round 10.

Tennessee Titans - Jonnu Smith

So it's late in your draft, your QB is set, and your running backs and wideouts are stacked.  But there is still a void in your tight end slot.  Enter Jonnu Smith.  There is nothing flashy about Jonnu, or anything in particular that jumps out at you, but he is locked in as the Titans starting tight end.  Delanie Walker is now out of the picture which will just further help his case.  The Titans are going to be run heavy one again, but when they do take to the air, after second year wide receiver A.J. Brown, there is not much else to throw too.  As long as Jonnu can stay on the field, he will see his fair share of targets, and his 6-3, 250 pound frame makes him an excellent red zone target.  Jonnu showed some flashes last year of being a very good tight end in this week, culminating in Weeks 14-16 where he scored double digit points each of those weeks.  If you don't want to burn a pick early on a star tight end, take a gander at Jonnu around the 12th or 13th round and you won't be disappointed.

Be on the lookout, as I wrap up the AFC with the West next.
