Alex Cora to the Red Sox Rumors Are Heating Up

The search for the next manager of the Boston Red Sox may be coming to an end very soon.  Immediately following the World Series this week, former Red Sox Manager Alex Cora's suspension came to an end. Cora is now able to meet with teams in the league if they would like to hire him to be their next manager.

According to Boston Globe's Alex Speier, Cora and the Red Sox have been in contact "multiple times" since Tuesday.

Cora, who was the Red Sox manager in 2018 and 2019, was let go by the team back in January for his part in the Houston Astros' sign-stealing scandal from 2017.  He spent the majority of this past season back home in Puerto Rico, but is now ready to get back in the dugout.

The Red Sox have reportedly interviewed new candidates to replace Ron Roenicke, who was let go following this past season.  Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom gets to make the decision who will be his next manager.  Reports coming out of Fenway is that the club is going to interview Cora in the coming days.  The team is also going to second interview Yankees bench coach Carlos Mendoza and Pirates bench coach Don Kelly.

Cora might be the best available candidate for the Red Sox and the most logical one too.  This off-season there were two teams that were a potential fit for Cora to be their next manager, the Detroit Tigers and Chicago White Sox.  The Tigers hired AJ Hinch to be their next skipper now that his suspension is over, and the White Sox hired 76-year-old Tony La Russa to be their next manager.  The only logical spot left for Cora is to come home and manage the Red Sox in 2021.

Bloom is doing his due diligence in finding the next manager of the Red Sox.  The club will conduct their thorough search and complete second interviews, but it feels like Cora will end up with the job at the end of the day.

The Red Sox ownership likes Cora, the front office appears to like Cora, the players like Cora, and the fanbase likes Cora.  So what is the exact hold up on bringing Cora back into the fold?  Back in January, when ownership held a press conference going over Cora's dismissal, Red Sox CEO had a glowing endorsement for his former skipper.  Red Sox CEO Sam Kennedy would jump in and reply, “Alex is an incredibly talented manager. ... He expressed remorse and apologized yesterday to us for the embarrassment that this caused and he’ll go through a process of rehabilitation so we’ll see what happens.  He’s an extreme talent.”

Bloom has his work cut out for him as he builds the Red Sox from a last place team into a perennial winner.  His first step to restoring the Red Sox to prominence is to rehire Cora as the next manager of the Red Sox.
