Blues Add Krug, Will the Bruins Add Pietrangelo?

The Boston Bruins lost one of their own to NHL Free Agency last night when defenseman Torey Krug signed with the St. Louis Blues.  One of the top free agent prizes on the market inked a seven-year deal worth $45.5 million.  Krug has spent his entire career in Boston, playing in 523 games, scoring 67 goals with 337 points.

Bruins fans on social media are struggling with the loss of Krug.  It makes sense, as fans we fall in love with the players who wear the Bruins sweater and Krug has been a special player while in Boston.  In sports, teams can’t be afraid of free agency, it’s a part of the process and machine.

Following the news that Krug was heading to St. Louis, during his Zoom call he said that the Bruins had made him an offer to remain in the black and gold.  He said the team offered him a deal a year ago and they “pulled the deal.”  "It was pulled for me.  I didn’t have an offer, and when they offer me a year ago and then it’s gone…I don’t know what I am expected to do.  Just being blunt and being honest with you.  Most people don’t share that side of it – but it is what it is,” said Krug.  He would follow up by saying, “I am very thankful for the opportunity [the Bruins] gave me and very thankful for the opportunity that the Blues gave me.”

Krug said that communication ended between him and the team.  The opportunity to become a St. Louis Blues defenseman was on the table and he leaped at that and the $45.5 million payday.  Within minutes of Krug signing with the Blues the Bruins social media had a goodbye video posted to Twitter with highlights of Krug’s time in Boston.  Nothing like saying, love ya, miss ya, but it’s time to move on like have a tribute video ready to go.

Has anyone checked on the well being of Jack Edwards yet?
The Bruins will miss Krug on the power play as he was one of the best on the power play.  It’s highly likely he’ll assume that role with the Blues and help them with the man advantage.

It appears the Bruins have other plans beyond Krug.  Hopefully those plans include getting bigger and tougher.  With the door officially closing on Krug in Boston, his signing in St. Louis looks to have closed the door on one of their own.

The Alex Pietrangelo Era in St. Louis has ended, and could he come to Boston?  It’s clear the Bruins have a need at the blue line.  Krug is gone, Chara is 44 and a free agent, and they only re-signed often injured Kevin Miller to a one-year-deal.

Pietrangelo, 30, is still a top defensemen and was the top man on the market heading into free agency.  The now former Blues Captain had 16 goals and 36 assists in the COVID 2019-20 season, setting a career high in goals and just missing a career high in points.  The Bruins will have competition for his services as the Vegas Golden Knights are looking to add the veteran defenseman.  The Golden Knights, who are up against the $81.5 million hard cap, traded forward Paul Stastny to Winning to free up the space to add an impact player.

The Bruins have over $15 million in cap space with some needs to fill.  The Bruins might be planning something big since they’ve been quiet at the start of free agency.  Fans get frustrated with Sweeney and his approach to free agency, but the proof is in the pudding.  The team has been competitive year in and year out recently.  With Krug off the market maybe he’s lining up a date with Pietrangelo?
