The NFL Needs to Get This Under Control and Fast

When waking up this morning, we began to hear the news that Patriots' cornerback Stephon Gilmore was being placed on the COVID-IR list after testing positive for the virus.  This is coming off the heels of quarterback Cam Newton testing positive and practice squad defensive lineman Bill Murray being placed on the list as well.  So what does this mean now for the Patriots?  Odds are that more players will be announced to have tested positive for the virus, but I am merely just speculating.

According to The MMQB's Albert Breer, Gilmore was one of about 20 "close contacts" with Newton who took a separate plane to Kansas City on Monday.  The question that now needs to be asked is whether players who have had close contact with a player who tested positive should be allowed to travel moving forward? The league is starting to develop a problem with this virus which is causing speculation on whether players and the teams are doing the right things and following protocols on a daily basis. The Tennessee Titans had two more players test positive on Tuesday, which might cause their game with the Buffalo Bills to be cancelled this Sunday.  The Titans last game against the Steelers was postponed last week and moved to later this season due to players and personnel testing positive for the virus.  ESPN's Adam Schefter said that the league was going to investigate the Titans for violating the league's coronavirus protocol.

It's clear that the Titans situation is different from the Patriots situation.  The Patriots facility is now closed for the next couple of days and the team will meet remotely as they prepare for the Broncos this Sunday.  The situation in New England is no longer just a Newton issue, it's now spreading within the team and hopefully it can be contained to the three players who've currently tested positive.

The hope beyond not spreading it to the team, is that this has not spread to the Kansas City Chiefs as well.  As of this morning, the Chiefs all tested negative for COVID.  The All-Pro defensive back was all over the field and played in 56 snaps in Monday night's loss to the Chiefs, including at the end of the game when he was pictured with the face of the NFL, Patrick Mahomes. While this news is just breaking surrounding the Patriots and their coronavirus exposure, hopefully it was contained and there are no additional positive tests.  The Patriots already have had the most players in the league opt-out of the season due to this virus and now it is infecting their locker room.  It feels like we're heading to an area that the NFL did not want to see happen.  Hopefully the league, the teams and the players can start to get this under control so we do not see a stoppage in play.  It's time to double mask up like Bill Belichick and wash our hands because the only way to contain the spread is by everyone doing the right thing.  Hopefully Mahomes doesn't test positive because if he does, Brittany will not be happy....
