Week 4 Fantasy Football Shark Tank

Fantasy Football Shark Tank is a brand-new weekly article I will be doing.  Here are three potential outcomes for certain fantasy players heading into Week 4 that I am “selling” to the fantasy football sharks (me) and the level of investment made by the sharks (still me).  Kind of like a Nutty Professor type of situation.

1.   Baker Mayfield Finishes as a Top 5 QB in Week 4

Mayfield has not had a great schedule to start the year.  Not every matchup was labeled as difficult, but the young QB has yet to have a juicy fantasy matchup.  Given the Browns’ offense game plan to run as much as possible, a matchup where the Browns are favored will not help Mayfield’s fantasy production.  Each of the last two weeks, Baker has only thrown the ball 23 times each game.  In today’s NFL that is basically nothing, and why the former Sooner has failed to reach 220 passing yards in either contest.  However, he has completed almost 70% of passes in that span and has looked pretty effective while dropping back.  This week the Browns travel to Jerry’s World to face the offensive powerhouse Dallas Cowboys.  The current implied team total for the Browns is 25.5 points and the over/under is 56.  I could see Baker having to chuck it, and with the weapons he has I expect a top 5 finish for Baker Mayfield in Week 4.

Baker Mayfield has quietly performed since his Week 1 fiasco.  The Dallas Cowboys are desperate to right the ship and I expect them to come out guns blazing.  Although wideouts Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham and running back Kareem Hunt seem to be playing less than 100%, I still think the Browns will be able to score against this Cowboys’ defense that seem to still be figuring it out.  For these reasons I would like to invest with 65% confidence.

2.   David Johnson Has 100 Total Yards and a Touchdown

David Johnson has not been the mega producer that fantasy general managers were hoping for.  After being acquired by the Texans for DeAndre Hopkins, everyone assumed that he would be a key in the Texans offensive production.  First of all, the Texans have had maybe the most brutal schedule to start the season and secondly, DJ has gotten almost all the snap at running back.  Now I know Duke Johnson is looking like he will be back this weekend, I do not see him taking too much away from the better Johnson.  The Texans take on Minnesota on Sunday and they have an implied team total of 29 points.  It seems like a get right game for DeShaun Watson and company.  The Vikings have given up over 120 yards on the ground in each of their first three games and twice they have yielded a 100-yard rusher.  I think that with Will Fuller showing up on the injury report again, you could see DJ as the lead produced for the Texans outside of Watson.  Even with Duke coming back, David Johnson will have a field day.

David Johnson has played 90.2% of the Texans’ offensive snaps, which ranks second among all running backs in the NFL.  He is also among the highest ranks when it comes to routes run by a back.  He looks spry, and despite having a tough matchup in Week 3, DJ still found the endzone to salvage his fantasy day.  I do believe that the Texans will have a good showing playing the Vikings at home in Houston, and even with Duke Johnson returning I still expect a lot of touches for David Johnson.  With the amount of opportunities, I see David Johnson getting, I can see a major fantasy performance.  I will invest with 80% confidence.

3.   TJ Hockenson is a Top 3 TE This Week

Sometimes it is best to not overthink fantasy football, and the Saints have just been so bad defending opposing tight ends.  Check out this breakdown:

  • Week 1: 6 catches, 47 yards 1 TD….not too crazy
  • Week 2: 13 catches, 136 yards 1 TD…wowza
  • Week 3: 9 catches, 104 yards 2 TDs…that’s a bunch

TJ Hockenson has had a good start to 2020 and I think this week could be his real breakout performance of the season.  His usage felt like an issue, but last week he saw seven targets and that was with WR star Kenny Golladay in the lineup.  The New Orleans Saints' defense is banged up and multiple players have already been ruled out.  This will make it so much easier for the Lion's offense to get rolling.  Wheels up for TJ Hockenson in Week 4!

As long as Matt Patricia is the head football coach of the Detroit Lions, I will never assume rational coaching.  With talented backs like D’Andre Swift and Kerryon Johnson on the roster he still wants to feed Adrian Peterson 20 times a game.  No disrespect to the legend, but giving him the ball over and over is the recipe to win.  And in Week 3, backup tight end Jesse James caught a touchdown.  I cannot rule out something like this happening again against the Saints. Because of Patricia I think this offense could just sputter all day and for that reason I AM OUT!
