Patriots Add WR Depth to Practice Squad

The Patriots needed more wide receivers to round out their roster with injuries to Julian Edelman and N'Keal Harry.  On Tuesday the team announced they acquired Isaiah Ford in a trade with the Miami Dolphins and they could be in on recently released wideout Ted Ginn Jr.

The Patriots announced on Wednesday that they added another wide receiver to the mix and signed Donte Moncrief to their practice squad.  The journeyman NFL receiver will now spend time on his second practice squad this season.  Moncrief should get an opportunity with New England based off the overall lack of production and injuries from the receiver position.

Moncrief is a former third-round selection of the Indianapolis Colts back in 2014 and has spent time with five different franchises.  He played four seasons with the Colts before joining the Jacksonville Jaguars as a free agent in 2018.  He split time between the Carolina Panthers and Pittsburgh Steelers in 2019 on making four catches for 18 yards.

In 77 total regular-season games, Moncrief has 204 receptions for 2,561 yards and 21 touchdowns.

This move is strictly more depth for a team that badly needs bodies at the wide receiver position.  Edelman is on the IR after knee surgery, and once he returns healthy he should be a much needed shot in the arm for this offense.  However there is growing speculation from people close to Edelman that he may not return this season. Which would be a massive blow to this offense that is already struggling to find consistency.

Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick doesn't believe that Edelman's injury is season ending.  "I don't think this is a season-ending situation, but we'll see.  I'm not a doctor," said Belichick.  Reports are that his knee surgery was to "clean things out" because he was feeling discomfort due to his knee being bone-on-bone.

The additions of Ford and Moncrief are a bandaid for the remainder of the season.  There is a chance both of these receivers work out within the Patriots offensive system and become regular contributors on offense.  The Patriots play the New York Jets this Sunday and this is a must win for the Patriots, who are looking to get back into the playoff hunt.
