Is Gordon Hayward Following the Al Horford Plan Out of Boston?

Over the last few weeks, there has been chatter that Gordon Hayward will opt-out of his four-year, $127 million deal with the Celtics.

According to Ryen Russillo of the Ringer, he says that he's heard Hayward wants out of Boston.

Russillo, who was on the Bill Simmons podcast said, "I’ve heard that Gordon Hayward does want out, but I don’t know if he’s going to get the money. he’s not opting out of that huge number unless he knows he’s getting the deal."  The conversation came up as the two were talking about what the Atlanta Hawks might do with the sixth overall draft pick.  There has been speculation that the Hawks want to sign a major free agent and that there is interest in Hayward if he opts-out.

On ESPN's "Lowe Post Podcast", Zach Lowe stated that there is something "mildly afoot", and if the Celtics lose Hayward it would be "disastrous".  The Celtics value their assets in Boston; it's all we ever hear about.  To lose Hayward for absolutely nothing the same way they lost Al Horford would be a problem.

Oh, speaking of Horford, could Hayward be angling an exit plan the same way Al did last season?  Hayward's agent needs to be finding out if there is league-wide interest in his client.  If there is legitimate interest in him and he can get a similar deal, Hayward is all but gone.

While we don't know that anything is truly happening behind the scenes, where there is smoke there is usually fire.  There has been rumors that the Pacers are interested in Hayward.  If the Pacers are truly interested it would be more as a trade partner than him signing as a free agent.  The players speculated back from people close to the rumors think the C's could acquire Myles Turner or Victor Oladipo.

As things stand right now, it is really hard to see Hayward opting-out and walking away from $34 million.  In a pandemic year and becoming a free agent by your own choice doesn't seem smart.  If his agent has information that he can get him another big money deal, then it makes sense.

The Celtics have time to make a decision on Hayward if he opts-in for the final year of his deal.  This team is young and on the rise and Hayward complements Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown nicely.  Hayward is set to become 31-years-old and he hasn't been the same player since that devastating ankle injury in his debut.  It'll be interesting how it all shakes out, and if he were to leave who the Celtics would replace Hayward with on the roster.
