Red Sox Rumors: Keone Kela Want s to Play In Boston

When the Red Sox re-hired Alex Cora to be their manager players were thrilled he was back.  Eduardo Rodriguez took to Twitter and expressed his excitement with a few simple emoji's.  Rodriguez is battling back from missing the season due to myocarditis as a result of his bout with COVID-19.

Even former Red Sox lefty David Price weighed on Cora's return to Boston.  "AC was respected by everyone in the clubhouse,” Price told the Boston Globe's Julian McWilliams via text message.  “When he spoke we listened. He’s genuine and I appreciated everything he did for me and the team.  Guys respond to AC well and he has a different relationship with everyone on the team."

After the Red Sox announced Cora was officially re-hired to be manager, MLB posted on their Instagram a photo of Cora.  That prompted current free agent reliever Keone Kela to comment.  Kela expressed his desire to pitch for the Red Sox in 2021.

Kela would be a good fit for the bullpen that needs reliable arms.  Matt Barnes was average last season for the Red Sox with an ERA over four.  The rest of the bullpen, well you saw how 2020 went for the Red Sox, there's no need to re-hash that dumpster fire.

The Red Sox should kick the tires on Kela.  He's 27, but will turn 28 next season.  He pitched in only three games last season, but he still possess a promising arm.  He missed time last season with a forearm injury, so there is concern there for Kela, but there is upside.  He pretty much relies on two pitches, a four seam that can touch 97 mph, and a curve.  Between 2018 - 2020 Kela appeared in 89 games where he has a 2.90 ERA in 89 innings.

He has had a history of getting in trouble and people referring to him as a problem.  He disagrees with that assessment of himself.  Here is a quote from 2019, “I think the perception that people think I’m a clubhouse issue is very far off, if people watch my interactions with my teammates and they see how I move around, they would see it’s more so just from things that have happened, things that happened in Texas, things that have transpired since I got over here (Pittsburgh)."

The Red Sox could use a guy in the bullpen with a little edge, and Kela would be a perfect fit.  I'm willing to bet that if Kela was in the Red Sox bullpen the year Manny Machado took out Dustin Pedroia, he would have put a fastball on his elbow.  He could fill in the role left vacant by Joe Kelly in the bullpen when he left for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

I'd bring Kela in on a one-year deal for small money.  He can rebuild his value in a clubhouse led by Cora and he would be weapon in the bullpen if he's healthy.  The Red Sox need to continue to acquire good arms for the bullpen.  I like Kela, and he would be a fit for Bloom and the Red Sox.

Come to Boston, Keone Kela.
