Rich Hill Interested in Pitching For the Red Sox?

The Red Sox will arguably be connected to almost every name in free agency this offseason.  Chaim Bloom will be looking to add reliable quality pitching to his roster after last season's waiver wire castoffs didn't yield the greatest results.

Last season, the Red Sox were connected to left-hander Rich Hill, who opted to sign with the Minnesota Twins.  Now I understand that I said the Red Sox are looking for reliable starting pitching.  When Hill is on his game, he can be good.  In 38.2 innings last season he posted a 3.03 ERA and a 1.164 WHiP, striking out 31 batters with 17 walks.

Bloom should be salivating at the thought of those numbers compared to the Red Sox team ERA of 5.58.  Only the Tigers and Rockies had a worse team ERA than the Red Sox, if you can actually believe that.

Now back to Hill.  The free agent veteran is looking to pitch in 2021 and is looking at signing with a team that is a World Series contender next season.  Once again, I know what you are going to say, "the Red Sox aren't World Series contenders."  Keep reading and hear me out, will ya.

There is potential with Hill, and he will not be an expensive addition to the roster.  If you look at the obvious World Series contenders, the only team that feels like a true match is the Dodgers.  I would expect teams like the Rangers and Athletics to be in the mix for his services.  These teams who'll be in the market for Hill will be because of the potential his arm holds, even in his 40's, and he'll be cheaper than most free agent acquisitions.

The Red Sox make sense only because they offer Hill the opportunity to start in their rotation next season.  The Milton native was recently on the "Bradfo Sho" Podcast and went over his unique situation.  The veteran wouldn't tip his hand on where he would like to go next season, but had some comments on the Red Sox.

“Bullpen. Work on the bullpen,” he said.  “I think the lineup is good.  Get everybody back.  Obviously getting Sale back is huge.  Eddie, having him come back, being healthy.  And Nathan.  Those are three really, really, really good guys.”

Hill is going to prioritize going to a club that gives him the chance to win.  Once the dust settles and the bigger prized players sign, I would expect the Red Sox to be in the mix for Hill.  Merely for the fact he offers them a chance to start, and if he's healthy he could be very good for the Red Sox.  This team can still hit, they just couldn't pitch.  Bloom is going to bring in arms.  Hill isn't a bad consolation prize if they miss out on the likes of free agent Charlie Morton or a arm they prioritized in the trade market.
