Time for Bill Belichick to Shine

Before the season began, we as Patriot fans all knew that this season had the potential to go awry.  On paper, this roster is nowhere near as talented as previous teams.  You didn't actually need to see them on the field to come to that conclusion.  Truly, this roster had all of the makings of a four or five win team (it could still go that way, but we'll see).

However, I - as I'm sure many fans did - felt that under the guidance of Bill Belichick, they would win more.  With Belichick's game planning and preparation, this team would win some games that they probably shouldn't and therefore inflate the win total.  Through eight games, that hasn't really been the case.

Monday night against the Jets was a game they probably shouldn't have won, but for other reasons, and it's not really the type of game I'm talking about.  I'm looking more at the games where heading in they are overmatched.  The Kansas City game last month is a perfect example.

That was a game where, in theory, New England should have been blown out.  Instead, Belichick had a great game plan that held Patrick Mahomes and KC's potent offense in check pretty much the whole game, and kept the Pats in it.  Were it not for a couple of mental gaffes on the part of Brian Hoyer, that game could have turned out differently.  Alas, it didn't.

So, while Belichick and the Patriots haven't really "stolen" any games yet, the second half of the season presents plenty of opportunities to do so.  It starts this Sunday night against the Baltimore Ravens.

We all remember how last season's meeting played out.  Lamar Jackson and the Ravens ran wild, raced out to a 17-0 lead and never really looked back en route to a 37-20 victory.  The Pats just looked like they were running in cement while the Ravens were running on treadmills.  It could be more of the same this year.

Baltimore is clearly the better team on paper, but can Belichick draw something up to slow down the Ravens rushing attack?  Can he put the ball in Jackson's hands and force him to make plays with his arm?  These are the types of games I looked at before the season started and felt Belichick could be the difference maker.

This Sunday won't be his only opportunity, though.  Coming down the line are games against the Cardinals and Rams, as well as games against the two teams they are looking up at in the AFC East standings.

This team's season is on life support right now.  If they have any hopes of making a run at the playoffs this year, Belichick has to be the reason why.  He still has a lot of critics who point to his underwhelming record without Tom Brady.  He could silence a lot of them with a strong finish to this season.
