Red Sox Rumors: Boston Showing Strong Interest in Free Agent Kiké Hernandez

The Boston Red Sox are showing strong interest in free-agent utility player Kiké Hernandez, according to Chris Cotillo of

Cotillo would go on to add that a deal is not imminent between Hernandez and Boston.  The Red Sox are one of the few teams interested in the former Dodger.

Hernandez, 29, spent the last six seasons in Los Angeles.  During his time with the Dodgers, he played every position except catcher.  He mainly served as a second baseman and outfielder.

Last season, Hernandez had a down year hitting just .230 with five home runs and 20 RBI’s in 48 games.  The league is coming off the shortened 60-game season, which shouldn’t impact him in free agency.

According to Peter Gammons, Hernandez may only be looking for a one-year contract, which could be appealing to Boston.  The Red Sox have former Dodgers top prospect Jeter Downs waiting in the minors.

Hernandez came up clutch for the Dodgers during this postseason that saw the Dodgers win the World Series.  He had a huge game tying home run against the Braves during Game 7 of the National League Championship Series.

The Red Sox are pursuing potential free-agents this offseason to fill their void at second base.  Boston has some internal options in Christian Arroyo, Michael Chavis and Downs.  Hernandez gives the Red Sox versatility all over the diamond.

Hernandez is not going to be an offensive threat if he comes to Boston.  He will offset his struggles at the plate with stellar defense, which Chaim Bloom values.

Boston is not the only team showing interest in Hernandez.  The Minnesota Twins have shown interest in bringing him to the Twin Cities.  The Twins could use Hernandez the same way he was utilized in Los Angeles.

The Red Sox will continue to monitor free agency to potentially fill their vacancy at second base.  Boston has internal options and options in free agency.  The Red Sox have been connected briefly to Marcus Semien prior to Christmas.

Given the current economic climate of the league due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, many teams have been quiet this offseason.  The Red Sox reset the luxury tax and have financial flexibility this winter.

While nothing is imminent with Hernandez, Boston is possibly looking to bring him in on a one-year deal makes sense.  The Red Sox have been relatively quiet this offseason, but recently added outfielder Hunter Renfroe and right-hander Matt Andriese.  Hernandez wouldn't be a major splash but his potential signing would bring excitement to Boston as this offseason unfolds.
