Red Sox Rumors: Twins Eddie Rosario Clears Waivers, Sox Interested?

SHARE:

The Minnesota Twins placed outfielder Eddie Rosario on outright waivers last night. cHe was potentially due anywhere from $8.6MM to $12.9MM in arbitration.  Twins were looking for a trade partner for Rosario, but were not able to find any takers.  Rosario cleared waivers on Wednesday afternoon.

The Twins now have until 8pm to offer him a contract or he will become a free agent.

Rosario, 29, has spent his entire career with the Twins where he was drafted by the club in the fourth round back in 2010.  Offensively, Rosario could help any number of teams looking for a corner outfielder if he makes it to free agency.  In the 60-game shortened season, he batted only .257 with 13 home runs and 42 RBI.  Two seasons ago, he hit .277 with 32 home runs and knocked in 109 RBI.  A downside to potentially having Rosario in the lineup is the lack of walks.  His low walk rates means he swings the bat, which isn't a bad thing.  It feels that he can be too impulsive when he's in the batters box, which might cause some teams to have pause when signing him.

Rosario, 29, has spent his entire career with the Twins where he was drafted by the club in the fourth round back in 2010.  He has always had a decent arm and good range in left field, but his defensive metrics have been in a decline since 2015.

With the emergence of Alex Kirilloff and financial uncertainty due to the coronavirus pandemic, Rosario is the odd man out.  It's highly unlikely he will return to the crowded Twins outfield, which could become a Red Sox gain.
The Red Sox could be in the market for another outfielder with Jackie Bradley Jr. currently a free agent.  If Bradley were to exit and sign elsewhere, the Red Sox could look to bring in Rosario on a short one or two-year deal.  If the Red Sox were to slide Andrew Benintendi from left field to center, Rosario could be a capable left fielder for Boston.

There is always some risk moving players around the diamond.  Benintendi isn't a natural centerfielder.  If feels more likely that Verdugo will be in center for Boston even for one year until Jarren Duran is ready later in 2021 or 2022.
The Red Sox have financial flexibility this offseason and Red Sox CBO Chaim Bloom has plenty of options to choose from to improve his roster.  Bloom is going to add to the offense, it's a matter of whether it'll be a splash or a minor piece for the bench.  The club needs to focus on pitching and add much needed depth to keep this team competitive.  Once the Red Sox address the rotation, Bloom could swoop in and add a depth bat like Rosario.
