Red Sox Rumors: With MLB Non-Tender Deadline Looming, the Red Sox Should Still Focus on JA Happ

On Wednesday, Major League Baseball's version of Cyber Monday will happen when the free agent market is flooded with additional free agents.  Teams have until Wednesday to tender players on their roster contracts for next season.  The Red Sox have been relatively quiet since the start of free agency, but in fairness most of the league has been too.

Last night, the Royals took a potential Red Sox free agent target off the board.  The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal tweeted that former A's lefty Mike Minor has agreed to sign with the Kansas City Royals.  This comes on the heels of Charlie Morton signing a one-year deal with the Atlanta Braves, another Red Sox target.

The Minor deal is important to the Red Sox because it potentially paints the picture for what JA Happ will cost if Chaim Bloom looks to sign him.  Happ could be one of the players the club locks up during the upcoming Winter Meetings.

Bloom and the Red Sox have been linked to Happ this offseason.  Happ, who pitched for the Yankees last season, went 2-2 in nine starts with a 3.47 ERA.  He never quite lived up to the $17M AVV during his time with the Yankees.  Happ has been durable, averaging 170 innings each season between 2016 and 2020.  If he comes to the Red Sox, they will need him to cut down the gopher ball.  He allowed 34 in 2019 and eight this past season.

MLB Trade Rumors predicts that Happ will sign a one-year, $6 million dollar deal.  Happ would essentially replace the hole made by Martin Perez after the Red Sox declined his club option for next season.  The Red Sox declined a $6.85 million option on Perez at the end of the season.  Happ would be a cheaper replacement for Perez with decent career stats when on the bump at Fenway.

Happ isn't the long term answer for the Red Sox, especially considering he is 38-years-old.  He would be a capable arm in a rotation that badly needs consistency from their starting pitching.  They finished the 2020 season ranked 25th in starters with a 5.34 ERA, last in starters with a 1.56 WHIP, and 29th in starter's opponent batting average of .279.  I don't need to remind you that those gaudy numbers are based off the 60-game season they just played and not the typical 162-game season.  This team is thirsty for starting pitching and, even after the non-tender players shake out, Bloom would be wise to add the veteran Happ.
