Big Moves Around the Corner for Boston?

Can you hear that?  Can you hear Phil Collins “In the Air Tonight” playing?
“I can feel it coming in the air tonight, (Oh lord)
And I've been waiting for this moment, for all my life, (Oh lord)
Can you feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lord, (Oh lord)”

Now replace the lyric “all my life” with “all the offseason” and that is what my gut is saying to me.  Chaim Bloom and the Boston Red Sox are about to get aggressive and bolster up for the 2021 campaign.  So far the entire market has been at a stand still but the winds are starting to swirl and I feel like action is just around the corner.

ESPN’s Buster Olney dropped a tweet that mentioned the Red Sox were preparing to make some moves with the idea that they want to win in 2021.  If you follow me or read my stuff then you know that I think the Sox can and will win in 2021.  Hearing the chatter starting to confirm my hope for the team is absolute poetry to me.
On Wednesday, former Cy Young winner Corey Kluber threw in front of a slew of teams to prove that he is ready to pitch in the upcoming season.  The Boston Red Sox had a presence at this bullpen session and the hope is that if they liked what they saw then they will try to bring Kluber on board.  Corey Kluber is in the second act of his career and he is eager to prove that he is still a dangerous weapon on the mound.

Jeff Passan tweeted what that workout looked like and it seems like he is ready to pitch.  If the Sox are able to bring Kluber in on a 1- or 2-year deal than I am all for it.  I am telling you it sounds like Bloom is ready to get cooking.

The Corey Kluber rumblings are not the only thing fans are noticing.  There have also been multiple reports that Boston is actively looking to trade outfielder Andrew Benintendi for what is being called “pitching prospects.”  In my opinion, that means they are looking for pitching with cheap contracts and not necessarily 18-20-year-old players.  Obviously, my hope is that these pitchers can help out the big-league club sooner rather than later, but if it is just for long term prospects than I think that is still a good move for the ball club.

Benintendi’s current salary is $6.6 million and removing that would take their potential spending to the next level.  Nothing against Benintendi, I really enjoyed rooting for him, but he hasn’t lived up to a seventh overall draft pick.  Maybe a change in scenery would be best for AB.  The truth is that he was an undersized outfielder that did not have a long resume before being selected, and in my honest opinion he is expendable to the organization.  Jeez that was cold.  It sounds like the market is actually hotter than expected so a deal seems to be coming along quickly.  It is happening…

If you want to read more on both the Corey Kluber and Andrew Benintendi situations, make sure you check out Chris Henrique’s articles on those topics.  The kid is good, and he knows what he is talking about.  I cannot confirm nor deny that he has sources that should be taken seriously.

As of today the Red Sox are about $27 million dollars under the luxury tax threshold, so they do have some room to add to their current roster.  That is including David Price’s $16 million and Dustin Pedroia’s $12+ million that Boston is on the hook for.  Only if they could just get rid of that last year of Pedroia’s contract.  If that money came off the books then they would really do work.

It is still a big unknown if Chaim Bloom will be an aggressive team builder.  Obviously, the best-case scenario is that Bloom operates similar to his former mentor Andrew Friedman.  Someone who came up learning how to operate with no resources and once he went to a big-time team started making big time moves.  I think Bloom has that in him and I always reference last year’s draft whenever talking about how aggressive Bloom will be in Boston.  Chaim Bloom and his scouting team tagged Blaze Jordan as a prospect they wanted to bring into the fold, and they did what they had to do to make it happen.  I think that was a fantastic sign for Bloom and Red Sox Nation.

Believe me, I know how frustrating it can be as a fan to see Boston continuously lose out on players.  But the sad truth is that the MLB offseason has yet to even truly kickoff.  There are so many moves to be made for the Sox.  Many reports and sources have been coming out all offseason stating that the Red Sox have been interested in different players.  When you read the tea leaves, its seems like things are about to get popping for Boston and I really hope Bloom and company are aggressive and want to contend in 2021 because THEY CAN!
