Boston Red Sox: Corey Kluber Will Pitch In Front of Scouts on Wednesday

Everyday, Red Sox fans wonder if this will be the day Chaim Bloom will strike and make a move to improve this club.  Will he make a major splash to his roster to position the club better for 2021?  The Red Sox are moving at a snail's pace this offseason while other teams around them are making moves.

The Chicago White Sox went out Monday night and added the best reliever on the free agent market.  The South Side signed free agent Liam Hendriks to bolster their bullpen.

This latest free agent signing has shown that the there is money to be made in the market this offseason.  Hendriks agreed to a three-year, $54 million contract with a club option for $15 million.  An option that will be automatically paid out whether he pitches his last season for the White Sox

It’s somewhat unclear whether Boston truly was interested in Hendriks.  Red Sox fans have already shown their frustration on social media following Hendriks signing with the White Sox.

The Red Sox will watch Corey Kluber pitch this week in Florida as the veteran attempts to show he’s ready and healthy.  Boston will have some competition for the veteran right-hander.  It’s been reported that because Kluber lives in Massachusetts, Boston is the leader in the clubhouse.

A source close to the situation feels that Boston will be the team to land Kluber.  But based off the offseason there’s reason for concern.  The Red Sox have missed out on a few names to which they’ve been connected.  If Kluber fails to end up in Boston, fans will pounce on Boston’s front office, and for good reason.

Kluber would be a fit in Boston and a short-term commitment makes sense considering his age.  As Chris Sale recovers from Tommy John surgery, Kluber, if healthy, can provide leadership and depth for the rotation.

There are injury concerns surrounding Kluber.  Since 2019 he has come back from a fractured forearm, and then suffered an oblique injury during his comeback.  Following the trade to the Texas Rangers, Kluber made one start and was sidelined with a grade 2 teres major strain in his right shoulder.

Bloom stated that the team will not sign a free agent pitcher to more than a three-year deal.  Given Kluber’s age, Boston shouldn’t go any more than two years.  Even that could be more than Bloom is willing to go for Kluber, which could ultimately take Boston out of the running.

The upside of adding a healthy Kluber is enticing for The Red Sox and the fan base.  Over the course of his 10-year career he has made 204 starts while posting a 3.16 ERA.  Bloom could take the risk and there is definite risk in Kluber considering how little he’s pitched in the last two years.

Boston has the financial flexibility to make a move this offseason.  There is risk in Kluber, but there is risk with any free agent pitcher signed.  Kluber won’t force the Red Sox to break the bank, but it’s time to invest some money in the market and improve this rotation.
