Red Sox Breaking News: Boston re-signs Martin Perez to 1-year deal

The Red Sox are bringing back left-hander Martin Perez to a one year, $5 million contract with a club option for 2022.  The deal was first reported by The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal and Mass Live's Chris Cotillo.

Perez returns to the Red Sox for 2021 on a $4.5 million base salary, with a buyout for $500,000.  The 29-year old lefty spent 2020 with Boston, where he was 3-5 with a 4.50 ERA over 12 starts.  He pitched 62 innings, finishing with a 1.339 WHIP.

Boston declined his $6.25 million option back in November, making him a free agent.  The Red Sox remained in contact with Perez while the market was unfolding this winter.  The Astros and Padres were also in on Perez this winter.

The news of Perez potentially coming back to Boston began to circulate this week.  Cotillo wrote a column naming multiple players Boston has expressed interest in.  The Perez signing does not rule out the Red Sox from bringing in another starting pitcher.   Boston has been heavily linked to Jake Odorizzi and recently Garrett Richards and Matt Moore

With the addition of Perez, the Red Sox rotation now features Eduardo Rodriguez, Tanner Houck, Nick Pivetta and potentially Rule 5 pick Garrett Whitlock

The Red Sox will need to make a move on their 40-man roster.  The club has some players they can designate for assignment and, according to Over the Monster, the team could designate Joel Payamps, who they claimed from Arizona or possibly Jeffrey Springs.  There could also be a trade on the horizon that involves left fielder Andrew Benintendi, who has been heavily involved in trade rumors.
