Boston Red Sox: The Team Is Expected To Announce Miguel Bleis Signing Friday

It's been about nine months since the Boston Red Sox were expected to sign international free agent Miguel Bleis.  The Red Sox can officially sign international free agents beginning tomorrow and the team is finally expected to announce the Bleis signing.

Baseball America reports Bleis as one of the top prospects available on the international market.  Boston is expected to give the teenage outfielder their biggest bonus, which could exceed $2 million.

The international free agent market has been on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic.  Teams were expected last summer to sign these players, but that was delayed and pushed until this month.  Baseball America’s scouting report on the 16-year-old Bleis; “Bleis is one of the top athletes in the 2020 international class.  He has a sleek, athletic frame with high physical upside.  He glides around center field with an easy gait and long strides, with average speed that might tick up as he gets stronger along with a strong arm.  He has a quick bat with gap power and a chance to turn more of his doubles into home runs once he gets stronger.”

Overall the course of the last year, Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom has been replenishing his farm system.  The acquisition of Bleis will quickly add another young outfielder to the system with upside.

Bleis, who trains with the Mejia Top 10 program, has shown average power at the plate, but scouts are expecting him to improve has he continues to develop.  Bleis has displayed the ability to display bat speed and a short compact swing.  During the showcase for the young prospect, he impressed with his ability to use all gaps in the field.

While only being 16-years-old, he has an MLB body type that he will continue to fill out as he matures and gets older.  He will give Boston another outfielder in the system with high upside.  That group already includes Jarren Duran and Gilberto Jimenez, who both will look to take another step forward in 2021.

The Red Sox should be adding some young talent into their system Friday once the signing period becomes active and official.  Bloom has been methodical in his approach to build this team and his farm system.  He's expected to add Bleis and it'll be interesting where he'll be ranked as a prospect in the Red Sox system.
