Red Sox Rumors: Boston Showing Interest in Free-Agent closer Alex Colome

The Red Sox are one of a few teams who have interest in free-agent reliever Alex Colome.  Boston has been connected to many of the free-agents this offseason.  Colome would fill a void in the back-end of the Red Sox bullpen.

Following the trade of Brandon Workman to the Phillies, the Red Sox turned to Matt Barnes as their ninth-inning option.  Barnes converted nine saves in 13 opportunities in 2020.  The Red Sox haven’t committed to Barnes as their closer for 2021.

Colome posted a 0.81 ERA as the closer of the White Sox in 2020.  He allowed only two earned runs and 13 hits in 22 1/2 innings of work.  The former White Sox closer also converted 12 of 13 save opportunities.  Even more impressive was the fact he didn’t allow a single home run last season.

While the Red Sox are said to be connected to Colome, it is unknown how aggressive they are in pursuing the free-agent closer.  Colome and Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom have familiarity in each other from their time in Tampa Bay.

The 32 year-old reliever might be a fit for Boston as a short term option.  MLB Trade Rumors projects Colome to sign a one-year, $6 million deal.  Boston is still well under the luxury tax threshold and haven’t spent much with their other two signings in Hunter Renfroe and Matt Andriese.

Over the course of his big league career, Colome has 138 saves, converting 85.7% of his chances.  The former Rays, Mariners and White Sox reliever was an All-Star in 2016.  He was the Rays closer that season, and also had 47 saves in 2017.

Boston is looking to add depth to their starting rotation this offseason and have only added Andriese, who can be a swingman.  Colome would be a nice addition to a bullpen that features Barnes, Ryan Brasier, Darwinzon Hernandez, Josh Taylor, Austin Brice and Phillips Valdez.

Bloom's familiarity might help him land Colome and bring him to Boston.  The Red Sox need another potential ninth inning option as they head into Spring Training.  If the Red Sox are serious about being competitive in 2021, adding Colome could be then jolt the bullpen needs as Bloom retools his club's pitching staff.
