Potential Boston - Bauer Partnership After Latest Video Post?

Prized free agent starting pitcher, Trevor Bauer, released a video today on his YouTube channel updating fans on his current standing in the market.  Bauer talks about a bunch of different aspects that are important to his ultimate decision to sign and some of the things that will not matter.

Bauer lists the characteristics that he believes he brings to the table: 1. Performance, 2. Data, 3. Ideas (I think he means training ideas).  The term “partnership” is referenced many times, so it is clear that Bauer is serious about what he brings to the table, but also what he expects when he decides to sign with a ball club.

First and foremost, I believe that the Red Sox can contend in 2021.  So if you think this year is just a bridge year then this article really is just a fun "what if."  But I think the Red Sox can contend, especially with a strong offseason and the way to make a splash would be bring on starting pitching that is ready to win now.

In the shortened 2020 campaign, Boston was in the top part of the league in all major offensive categories.  That includes a Top 5 finish in team total bases.  When you factor in that it was only the first 60 games for Alex Verdugo in a Sox uniform and JD Martinez’s down year it is easy to picture a good 2021.  Now bring Xander Bogaerts, Rafael Devers, Christian Vazquez, and anyone new that might join the ball club, it is hard to deny that the Red Sox could have one of the league’s best lineups in this upcoming season.

So after watching the YouTube video I think that Bauer and the Red Sox organization would greatly benefit from developing a partnership.

Trevor Bauer leads off by stating what will not persuade his decision in any major way.  Those two factors are geography and media markets.  Rumors have spread that he will gravitate towards bigger markets, but Bauer says that is “not necessarily true.”  I wouldn’t consider anything said here to be newsworthy, but it does open the door for a team like Boston to check in.

Now let’s dive into the matters that will affect Trevor Bauer’s decision to sign and why after watching what he has to say, I think Boston would be a good fit.

The right hander mentions happiness being a key to signing him, but I can’t comment on another person’s happiness.  There is no way I could ever know if he is happy.  Unless he wants to start hanging out then I can report back to you on his state of mind.  I will however breakdown the pillars mentioned that will supposedly make him happy.

Bauer wants his team to be open minded to his training habits.  Red Sox team builder Chaim Bloom was the architect of player development for the Tampa Bay Rays.  Among his responsibilities was strength and conditioning.  It is safe to say that Bloom is in tune with how the players in his organization are striding to get better.   Bauer is the leader of “drive line” movement, and more and more players are turning to training methods similar to Bauer.  For example, Bauer was an early advocate of weight balls and now it is common practice.  Seems like Bloom would be the perfect guy to match up with Bauer when it comes to improving how players train and improve.

This next talking point is probably going to drive a lot of fans away from Bauer, but not me.  I actually like what he has to say.  Bauer is known for his online content and he would prefer his next team to embrace that.  As a fan, I love his vlogs and video content because it gives you a look behind the curtain of professional baseball.  He has curated some great conversations and allowed players to speak on their craft, and as a sports nerd I enjoy it.

From a Boston Red Sox standpoint, I have to imagine they would be more than happy with this ideal.  I mean one of the owners is a legendary television producer.  Boston’s video content has also been increasing over the years.  Last year they were one of the few franchises that produced their own version of “Hard Knocks.”  It is actually pretty awesome, and if you’re a Sox fan I would absolutely check it out.

Bauer also mentioned how he wants to help his teammates grow their brand.  I know this is a term that grosses out most fans, but it is the way of the world now and rejecting it will only hurt the franchises chances of bringing players aboard going forward.  Let me be selfish for a second.  I would be more than excited to get to know the players on the Red Sox roster through their own content.

Bauer talks extensively about his desire to win.  He was part of the Cleveland team that lost in the World Series, so it is understandable why he wants a chance to get a ring.  This partnership will simply not work if the Red Sox do not consider themselves to be contenders in 2021.  Bauer is a short-term weapon, wherever he goes is going to be expected to win.  The Red Sox fan base may be some of the most win hungry amongst the league and I am no different.  As I have already stated and will continue to say on all BSS platforms - the Red Sox can and should be trying to win this year.

I thought this was the most interesting section of his most recent post.  Trevor Bauer wants his next team to listen to what he has to say in regard to pitching every fourth day.  He goes on to state a couple of reasons why, and I have to admit he sounds like he has given this a lot of thought.  If the organization can make it work (and he did say he will not hurt the team if they can’t make it work) I think this would greatly help the Boston Red Sox.  Having a talented arm like Bauer pitch every fourth day could be great considering the holes in their rotation.  He could eat a massive number of innings and also lend rest to guys like Eovaldi and eventually Chris Sale.  The Red Sox are already using openers, so clearly they are open minded using newer tactics to win ball games.  Why would this be any different.

Of course, Trevor Bauer mentioned that money will obviously be a part of his decision.  He is the most prized free agent starter on the market, so he will get a large amount of money…a bag if you will.  To me, the most important rumor in regard to money is Bauer’s desire to get a high AAV.  When building a professional team, AAV won’t kill you.  The longevity of a deal can weigh a franchise down for years.  You cannot trade big years and big money, but short year contracts are always tradeable.  At age 30, Bauer is the perfect candidate for a high AAV, short year deal.  A team builder's best friend.

Trevor Bauer is coming off of his best year of his career.  A season in which he held a sub 2 ERA and won the National League Cy Young Award.  He hasn’t thrown less than 175 innings since 2014 and looks like he is improving as his career continues.  There isn’t any question whether he would vastly improve the Sox pitching staff.  Bauer could also be a fit off the field as well.

Rumors have been swirling about Trevor Bauer and a Boston partnership was seeming less and less likely.  After watching his recent YouTube video, I really think Bauer would be a good fit for the Boston Red Sox.  I really hope Chaim Bloom and company sees this roster as a contender and signing Trevor Bauer to a short year high AAV contract would prove they are ready to win in 2021.
