Red Sox Fans Growing Impatient as Another Free Agent Comes Off the Board

The Red Sox saw another free agent target come off the board on Monday night. Former Oakland A’s closed Liam Hendriks has signed with the Chicago White Sox. The reported deal is a three-year, $54 million guarantee with a club option for a fourth season.  Both the option and buyout are worth $15 million as reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan. Hendriks will earn that money whether he’s part of the team or not. If the White Sox buy him out, they can pay the $15 million over the course of a few seasons.

This move bolsters the White Sox bullpen, making them a major contender in the American League. Hendriks is an immediate upgrade over former closer Alex Colome who has been linked to the Red Sox.  The move helps fortify another teams postseason aspirations while Red Sox fans are left waiting. Boston fans turned to social media voicing their displeasure over the Red Sox lack of action this offseason.  Red Sox fans are growing impatient as players connected to the team sign elsewhere. Furthermore, as reports surface regarding the potential trade of Andrew Benintendi, people are growing weary of Chaim Bloom.  The Red Sox seem to be emulating their division rivals with their approach to roster building.  Despite having differences in payroll.  The Rays have subtracted from their major league roster while Boston has made minor moves.  Even though Red Sox owner John Henry has deep pockets, it would be wise to let Bloom continue his approach to roster building.  The Rays have been successful the last few seasons with one of the lowest payrolls in baseball.  Tampa Bay’s front office is able to move on from their players and retool their roster.  Boston doesn’t need to follow that model, but Bloom has shown he can turn major league players into good prospects.  He showed that with his two trades during the 2020 season when he acquired pitchers Nick Pivetta and Connor Seabold from the Phillies

There was also the trade deadline deal that sent Mitch Moreland to San Diego for two positional player prospects.

The Red Sox have taken a slow, calculated and meticulous approach to this offseason.  While it’s only yielded smaller moves, it still appears Bloom has a plan and is sticking to it.  Hopefully by the time Spring Training rolls around, Boston fans have a clearer picture of what that is.
