Boston Celtics Danny Ainge: “We’re Talking and We’re Trying To Do Some Things”

The Boston Celtics dropped another game last night with a 127-112 loss to the Atlanta Hawks.  The Celtics are getting drastically close to hitting rock bottom.  Even with that being said, they are ninth in the Eastern Conference, but only one game from being fifth in the conference.

Despite being within striking distance and getting back into the playoff hunt, things feel bleak.  The Hawks Danilo Gallinari and Trae Young dominated the Celtics.  Gallinari went off for 38 points and a franchise-record 10 three-pointers.  Young dropped 33 points and inbounded the ball off Grant Williams back to get an assist on his own basket.

The Hawks blew the Celtics doors off in the first half due to Gallinari and his three-pointers.  The Celtics tried to get back into the game in the second half, but even a sloppy third quarter from Atlanta helped their cause.

Where do the Celtics go from here?

Celtics fans are upset and angry, which is a completely different tone from the fan base.  Fans are calling for Brad Stevens and Danny Ainge to lose their jobs.  It is natural for a passionate fan base to go to that extreme.  Firing both the Head Coach and General Manager is not the answer.  At least right now anyway.

On Wednesday, prior to the blowout loss to the Hawks, Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck made an appearance on “Felger & Mazz”.  The Celtics owner was asked legitimate questions about his team, their performance and his Coach and General Manager.  Grousbeck gave his full endorsement to Stevens and Ainge and they’ll be able to fix this team.

Grousbeck expressed his confidence in both men, spoke about Ainge scouting and drafting Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.  He also talked about how he was impressed with Stevens helping develop both All-Star players.

He would talk about the growing pains of a young team, “As Doc Rivers found out when you coach a young team, it’s a pain in the neck half the time, and you get gray hair, and you have to hope it gets better,” Grousbeck said.

When asked whether he would consider firing Stevens or Ainge, he responded with, “Immediately, either one of those guys would be the top candidate in the league for the job,” Grousbeck said.  “It doesn’t matter who else is out there.  So they are our guys, and we’re sticking with them.  And it was not even a question in my mind.”

Trader Danny on the Prowl?

Ainge joined the “Toucher and Rich Show” this morning and was asked about his teams struggles.  The Celtics General Manager sounded defeated and didn’t really provide any answers on how to fix this team.  But he is owning the teams struggles and wants his players to play hard all the time.

“This is a Danny Ainge issue and a player commitment issue,” said Ainge.  The accountability by Ainge is refreshing but he needs to look at his roster and figure out how to give it a jolt for the second half of the season.

"I'm trying to deflect some of the blame from our superstars.  But we are about winning in Boston.  That's all it's about.  I'm not going to do something just to do something.  But...We do not have a good enough team in my opinion,” said Ainge.

He did reiterate that he was going to make a trade for the sake of making a trade.  The Celtics do have the TPE and Ainge piggybacked on Grousbeck’s comments on “Felger & Mazz” that the TPE could be used in the offseason.

The Celtics could make a deal to bolster the bench and that might be the focus, because making a big trade in-season seems unlikely.  It is easier for teams to make bigger trades during the offseason that during the regular season.  Ainge commented on that same sentiment, which has people speculating whether or not they’ll keep this team status quo.

Ainge was asked whether or not he has tried to make a trade and fix the roster.  “We’re talking and we’re trying to do some things.”  The Celtics ownership, front office and coaching staff love their young players.  Their young players are struggling mentally and on the court.  There is still time to fix this team’s problems and move past this tough patch on the schedule.

Ainge admitting this was a “me problem” was the first step.  Now go fix it.
